Northern Arizona Dean Appointed USM Provost

Michael R. Stevenson, Ph.D., dean of the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences at Northern Arizona University (NAU), has been named provost and vice president for academic affairs at the University of Southern Maine (USM).

Stevenson, one of 93 applicants for the position, will join USM on Monday, July 2. He replaces John R. Wright, who is retiring at the end of June after a more than 40-year career in education, including the last 12 as USM dean and then provost.

“I am eager to join the University of Southern Maine community,” said Stevenson, “and am confident that my experiences at all levels of academic life will serve to support USM’s students, faculty and the advancement of USM as the intellectual hub of southern Maine and the state as a whole.”

“Dr. Stevenson brings a distinguished record of scholarly achievement,” said USM President Selma Botman, “and a well-earned reputation as an administrator with exceptional communication, advocacy and mediation skills. We are fortunate to have him.”

As dean at Northern Arizona University, an institution of more than 25,000 students, Stevenson managed a college of 150 full-time faculty in 11 academic departments and three research and service units. He facilitated an $8 million campaign for the design and construction of the university’s Native American Cultural Center.

Prior to joining Northern Arizona University in 2007, Stevenson served as Miami University’s associate provost and as the institution’s first chief diversity officer. He also held appointments at Ball State University as chair of the Department of Psychological Science and founding director of the university’s Diversity Policy Institute.

Student organization wins regional SIFE contest, prepares for nationals

A student organization at the University of Southern Maine has won its second consecutive regional championship based on a series of exemplary community-building projects. Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE), a 21-member team sponsored by the USM School of Business, competed on April 11 against student SIFE teams from New England and the Mid-Atlantic to win $1,000, as well as the chance to compete at the SIFE National Competition in May.

Representatives from the USM SIFE team competed against approximately 40 teams in this spring’s regional competition. Each team presented outcomes from community-based projects completed during the academic year to a panel of judges, which included executives from SIFE sponsor companies such as Sam’s Club, Walgreens, and Supervalu. Projects were judged based on their adherence to the SIFE mission to help people in need by applying principles of free enterprise.

In the 2011-12 academic year, the USM SIFE team completed a variety of projects designed to support increased capacity and sustainable business practices for Maine businesses, and also projects focused on addressing critical social needs. In March, the team organized ‘Stuff the Trucks,’ a food and donation drive sponsored by the Campbell Soup Company, raising over $1400 and 816 lbs of food for Good Shepard Food Bank. This May, the SIFE team presents Scarborough’s Eight Corners Pizza with four new deep freezers, an iPad, and training in new marketing strategies as part of its Step Up for Small Business project. The team recently received the President’s Leadership Award from the Maine Campus Compact in recognition of valuable contributions to campus civic-engagement efforts.

Camps fill summer days with music

It may be summer, but the USM School of Music's hallways are still filled with sound. While most of the college students are away for the summer, a slightly younger crowd is filling the classrooms. It's time for the annual USM Music & Theatre Camps.

The camps offer a week of training, skill developing, and good old-fashioned fun for students grades 4-12. Four different camp sessions are offered this summer with commuter and residential options. They include the Youth Band Day Camp for grades 4-6 (June 27-July 1), the Theatre Academy for grades 8-12 (June 26-July1), the Junior Music Academy for grades 7-8 (July 17-23), and the High School Music Academy for grades 9-12 (July 9-17).

The USM School of Music campers, who come from throughout Maine and northern New England, share an intensive musical experience crafting their talents, working with USM faculty, and meeting other musically-inclined youth from throughout New England. And, when the camps are complete, each group will hold a special concert to show off their skills.

Learn more about the USM Music & Theatre Camps here.

Reporters: Call the Music Office to arrange for a camp visit at 780-5265 or 780-5555.
