Sarah Slagle Arnold‘s (Creative Nonfiction, S’05) memoir, Faith and Madness: A Spiritual and Psychological Journey, was published August 1, 2012, by Wipf & Stock’s Cascade Books imprint. The story of growing up with a manic-depressive father and Sarah’s own major depression at age 19 takes place in the Depression years of the 30s and 40s. The department store where Sarah worked only part-time paid for her three-time-a-week therapy, which she believes saved her life, for a year and a half. Receipt of her first royalty check in March was a thrill, Sarah reports, and should be shared with all her mentors at Stonecoast. Look for Faith and Madness at the summer 2013 residence or on Amazon.

Julie Day‘s (Popular Fiction, S’12) story “Finding Your Way to the Coast” appears in A capella Zoo‘s best-of, fifth-anniversary edition, entitled Bestiary: The Best of the Inaugural Demi-Decade of A capella Zoo.

Summer Program for students grades 3-8

Problem solving, puzzles, LEGO robotics and modular origami are all part of the MMSETS (Maine Mathematics Science and Engineering Talent Search) summer program for students grades 3-8. The summer program will be held at USM in Portland during the week of June 24^th, the week of July 8^th, and the week of July 22^nd.

Through participating in this program, students receive a foundation for success in science, technology, engineering and mathematics careers.

The projects and problems covered change from year to year and even within the weeks of the program. This summer, the special topic is fractals: in geometry and problem solving, as well as modular origami models of fractals and the fractal antennas of mobile devices.

The quality of the program is highlighted by the fact that nine students from the American Mathematics Competition 2012 Honors Lists are students who participated in our programs several times.

NSF Launches $10,000 BREAD Ideas Challenge

The first phase will comprise an Ideas Challenge offering up to 25 prizes of $10,000 USD each for the best ideas for innovative, potentially transformative research foci that, if successfully addressed, could eventually be of significant benefit to smallholder farmers in developing countries. Research challenges will be accepted in any area of basic research and technology development in all fields of biological and physical sciences and engineering as long as the proposed research challenge is consistent with the BREAD Program objectives. Ideas for research foci and challenges will be accepted between April 1 and April 30, 2013 from individuals who are graduate students, postdoctoral associates or faculty at an eligible institution (e.g., a university, college, or non-profit research organization including museums, research laboratories, professional societies or similar organizations that are directly associated with educational or research activities) in the U.S. or internationally. Ideas will be judged by a panel of experts, and prizewinners announced in May 2013.

Trish Riley on Medicaid Expansion and Maine Taxpayers

Trish Riley, Adjunct Professor at the Muskie School, writes in the Bangor Daily News (posted March 28, 2013), "the assertion that Maine taxpayers are being penalized [in the ACA Medicaid expansion] deserves scrutiny." She notes that much of the expansion for MaineCare, Maine's Medicaid program, was paid by the initiative Dirigo Health, not state general funds, and describes the federal funding that Maine was able to secure--"dollars that other states did not receive." She will be facilitating a panel discussion on April 8th which will be examining MaineCare's coverage options under the ACA.

Maine Arts Commission and Maine Humanities Council Fund Event Series

The Franco-American Collection has been awarded $1,000 by the Maine Arts Commission and the Maine Humanities Council in a joint Maine Arts and Humanities Grant to fund an upcoming event series at the Collection.

The series, entitled Voix Franco-Américaines: Franco-American Voices will focus on the art of story-telling in the Franco community and will feature a guest lecture, performances by local story tellers and events highlighting the Collection's substantial oral history archives.

"This is a great example of an interdisciplinary event which will highlight an important aspect of Franco identity" says Collection Coordinator James Myall. "Maine is lucky to be home to a number of talented story-tellers, and we're looking forward to show-casing their talents, as well as the ability of all of us to tell compelling stories."

More information about the events, which are scheduled to take place this summer, will appear at a later date.

The Maine Arts Commission and Maine Humanities Council are independent state agencies that supports Maine’s arts and culture through a variety of grants and statewide services.
