Woodwinds at USM
Instruction
is available on all woodwind instruments including piccolo, flute, oboe,
bassoon, clarinet, and saxophone. The University of Southern Maine
faculty is a group of world-class performer/educators who take great pride
in developing their students to reach their fullest potential.
All of the woodwind professors at the University of Southern Maine are active performers on their instruments and regularly perform as soloists and as members of orchestras, jazz ensembles, and chamber music ensembles. Some ensembles that our faculty have performed with are the Portland Symphony Orchestra, the Bangor Symphony Orchestra, the Vermont Symphony Orchestra, the Music from Bear Valley (California) Orchestra, the Portland Opera Repertory Theater Orchestra, the Rhode Island Philharmonic, Handel Haydn, Boston Modern Orchestra Project, and the Spoleto Festival USA.
Woodwind instruction for both Music Education majors and Performance majors is given in the form of weekly hour-long private lessons. In addition to weekly lessons, students have the opportunity to perform for the entire wind faculty in semester-end juries, where the students receive written comments about their performance. Music Education majors present a senior recital open to the public in the beautiful Corthell Concert Hall, and Performance majors present recitals in both their junior and senior years.
Woodwind instrumentalists
perform once a semester in the weekly recital class, can give non-required
recitals, and have the opportunity to perform as members of the University
Orchestra, Concert Band, Wind Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble, Flute Ensemble,
Clarinet Choir, Saxophone Ensemble, Double Reed Ensemble, and Woodwind
Quintet. Additionally our woodwind students have performed as extra players
for the Portland and Bangor Symphony Orchestras.
Former woodwind students at the University of Southern Maine are currently teaching in schools and universities, performing music in many different styles, and are members of the nation's leading service bands and finest professional orchestras throughout the world.
