The
Southern Maine Symphony Orchestra
The Southern Maine Symphony Orchestra comprises University of Southern Maine students as well as talented community players from the greater Portland area. The orchestra performs challenging, professional level repertoire, hosts a biennial concerto competition, and frequently collaborates with the USM choirs, Opera workshop, and guest soloists.
Highlights from the past two seasons include performances of: Beethoven Symphony No. 7, Bruckner Te Deum, Arvo Pärt Symphony No. 3, Johann Strauss, Die Fledermaus and an opera gala featuring both USM faculty and students highlighted by scenes from La Boheme, Nozze di Figaro, La Gioconda and Der Rosenkavalier.
The 2008-9 season will include: Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 5, Mozart Sinfonia Concertante, for violin and viola, USM faculty Nancy Gunn's "Maine Drives" and fully staged performances of Puccini's Suor Angelica and Gianni Schicchi.
