Jeremy Turner, junior voice recital
On Saturday, December 1 at 5 p.m., vocalist Jeremy Turner will present his junior voice recital. All jazz majors at USM have requirements to fill in classical performance. So, while the community has only heard Jeremy singing jazz, this recital is an opportunity to hear a very different technique in music making with the human voice.
Jeremy explains, "Classical singing is more straight forward and strict, while jazz is more open and free. I've enjoyed doing both, giving me an opportunity to work with other styles and develop more musical skill." Professional vocalists are often expected to audition in various styles, so these requirements assist USM students in persuing professional opportunities.
Jeremy has been singing since he was six years old, and began taking formal lessons in college. His first singing experience was with the Boy Singers of Maine for 2 - 3 years. He has continued singing in choruses through middle and high school, as well as in church and community choirs, where male voices are often difficult to find. Jeremy likes the "power of music--being able to hear something and feel it at the same time, and perform it yourself." He admits that music does as much for the performer as it does for the audience.
The program will include a set of Italian songs, a set of songs in English, and a mixed set including French, German and Spanish. With no particular theme, this is a representation of the classical repertoire that Jeremy has focused on in his academic career at USM.
Student recitals are free and open to the public.
