Brian L.
Diehl is one of the busiest professional trombonists throughout Greater Boston,
and low brass soloist with orchestras throughout New England, as well as a
member of the Springfield (MA) Symphony Orchestra. He frequently plays with such
orchestras as Rhode Island Philharmonic, Portland (ME) Symphony, Boston Modern
Orchestra Project, Vermont Symphony, Boston Landmarks Orchestra, and the
Berkshire Choral Festival Orchestra, not to mention the Boston Symphony and
Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestras.
Prior to his present activities, Mr. Diehl was for three seasons Principal
Trombonist of the Florida West Coast Symphony in Sarasota, FL. He was also
former Principal Trombonist with the New World Symphony under Michael Tilson
Thomas, recording, touring, and performing as soloist with that orchestra. Mr.
Diehl has played with the Boston Symphony (including performances at Carnegie
Hall), Boston Pops, and recorded with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra under
Solti, the Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra, and the National Repertory
Orchestra, for which he was a guest artist in 1996 (premiering his commission of
Anthony DiLorenzošs concerto, Little Buckaroo), and the Spoleto (Italy) Festival
Orchestra. He has been a member of and/or recorded with the Epic Brass Quintet,
Innovata Brass of Boston, Florida Brass Quintet, the Millar Brass Ensemble of
Chicago, and the New World Brass of Miami, FL.
He has given masterclasses at the Eastman School of Music, Eastern Washington
University, Florida International University, and at numerous high schools
throughout the country. Mr. Diehl has served on faculties at University of
Southern Florida (Tampa), Manatee Community College (Bradenton, FL), Miami-Dade
Community College (Miami,FL), and Florida International University (Miami).
Mr. Diehl has been a clinician for the Edwards/Getzen company, has published a
book entitled Low Brass Essentials , with itšs accompanying book of exercises
entitled Nutrients, and can be heard on the Koss, Argo, Naxos, and London
labels.
He began his formal studies at the Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan (where
he was the recipient of Fine Arts Award), and earned his BM from Northwestern
University, and his MM from New England Conservatory (where he became the first
brass player to receive the Rabb Presidential Scholarship). His teachers have
included Joseph Alessi, John Swallow, Norman Bolter, Douglas Yeo, Jay Friedman,
and Frank Crisafulli.
