Libbie Perry Bowder

Photo: Libbie BowderA native of Brewer, Maine, Libbie Perry Bowder has taught Music History, Fundamentals of Music, and Music Appreciation at the University of Southern Maine since 1984. She received her Bachelor's in Music Education in 1969, when USM was Gorham State College, and her Master's in Music Education in 1983 at USM. She went on to earn her Master of Library and Information Studies in 1992 at the University of Rhode Island, and in 1995 began doctoral studies in Music History at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst.

A performer for 35 years, now retired, Libbie has played clarinet, oboe, bass clarinet and recorder in various orchestras, bands, chamber music and theatre orchestras, and involved in choral singing and madrigal groups. Her current scholarly interests are Early Music performance practice, roles of women in music history, the life and works of Charles Ives, Erik Satie and Percy Grainger, bibliographic instruction for music students, and Maine history. She is also involved in children's literature, collecting antique post cards and books, camping and hiking, and exploring the Western U.S.

In 1976, Libbie founded the North Haven Community Chorus and directed the group until 1980. In 1980 she became the USM Department of Music Librarian, and in 1981 created the position of Music Department Concert Manager. She has been a music copyist and arranger, a Research Assistant to the USM Graduate Education Department, Music Department Office Manager and Music Department Bookkeeper.
