Evenings at Abromson / Spotlight Concert Series

Eight Seasons

Hannaford Hall, Abromson Community Education Center, USM Portland.

Each season has a "twin" in the other hemisphere of the world. Join USM’s Robert Lehmann and the Portland Chamber Orchestra, with Lisa Saffer as narrator, in a world tour of the earth's Eight Seasons! Vivaldi's ever-popular "Four Seasons" will be performed alongside its southern hemisphere counterpart, "Four Seasons of Buenos Aires," by Argentine tango master, Astor Piazzola,

Old Fashioned Outdoor Band Concert with USM Concert Band

Outside Corthell Hall

Bring the family and lawn chairs to enjoy the USM Concert Band, conducted by Peter Martin, performing its 6th annual old-fashioned concert on the green outside Corthell Hall, Gorham.  Hamburgers, veggie burgers, soda, milk, cookies, ice-cream, etc. available at "old-fashioned" prices,  Also, be sure to visit the nearby USM Art Gallery before or after the concert.

Spotlight Concert Series

Anastasia Antonacos, solo piano 

Renowned pianist, faculty member and USM music alumna, Anastasia Antonacos '97, performs solo piano repertoire spanning two centuries including Beethoven’s Sonata Op. 31 No. 3, and Prokofiev’s “Romeo & Juliet.” Preceded by a Special Spotlight Series Opening reception for corporate sponsors and invited guests with USM’s new president.

Spotlight Concert Series

Brian Diehl, trombone “Slides, Whistles, and Song”

An evening of musical fun that includes folksong compositions of Robert Schumann, Gustav Mahler, and Ralph Vaughan Williams. Also included is the jazzy and emotional “Colloquy” of William Goldstein; and the successful theme song, “Whistler and His Dog,” written by Sousa's trombone soloist, Arthur Pryor. $15/$10/$5

Musical Theater

“A New Brain” by William  Finn and James Lapine

Q: What do you get when you combine a nasty frog, brain surgery, a tap-dancing Jewish mother and a happy ending? A: This quirky and witty little musical! William Finn's semi-autobiographical musical is about making the most out of life in the face of tragedy, as well as the healing power of art. A Maine Premiere (originally produced at Lincoln Center Theater) directed by Ed Reichert and performed by our musical theater majors.

Southern Maine Symphony Orchestra

Gorham Middle School

The Southern Maine Symphony Orchestra will perform Mozart’s “Overture to the Abduction from the Seraglio” and his “Sinfonia Concertante,” followed by Tchaikovsky’s “Symphony No. 5, conducted by Robert Lehmann.

Sunday, November 9, 2 p.m.

USM Wind Ensemble

This elite woodwind ensemble, under the direction of Peter Martin, will perform an outstanding selection of music for winds.

Friday, November 14, 8 p.m.

Spotlight Concert Series

Trent Austin: "Clazz and Jassical"

USM faculty artist Trent Austin will present an evening of exciting trumpet music from the 1700's to today. Some of the featured composers will be Haydn, Debussy, Paganini, and Monk, as well as a few originals of his own. Joining him are USM jazz faculty Chris Oberholtzer, Gary Wittner, Bronek Suchanek, and others.

USM Concert Band

McCormack Performing Arts Center, Gorham High School

Peter Martin conducts USM’s largest ensemble, the USM Concert Band.

USM Jazz Ensembles

The USM Jazz Ensemble, directed by Chris Oberholtzer and the Lab Jazz Ensemble, directed by Doug Owens, will present an evening of traditional and contemporary works for big band.

Thursday, November 20, 7:30 p.m.

USM Youth Ensembles

Merrill Auditorium, Portland

Stunningly talented kids make up the USM Youth Ensembles which include the Portland Youth Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Robert Lehmann; the Portland Youth Wind Ensemble, conducted by Peter Martin; the Portland Young People’s String Consort, conducted by Deborah Dabcyznski; and the Portland Youth Junior Orchestra, conducted by Dan Keller. $6/$3 suggested donation at the door.
