Maine Center for Toxicology and Environmental Health

Mission

The mission of the Maine Center for Toxicology and Environmental Health (MCTEH) is to develop and apply integrated contemporary epidemiologic, physiologic, molecular, cellular and genetic strategies to increase our understanding of environmental impacts on health.

GOALS

To discover ways to improve health and prevent disease,

To maintain an interactive community outreach program,

To train students and professionals in toxicology and related disciplines;

To increase public understanding and awareness of environmental and genetic factors causing disease in our populations;

OBJECTIVES

The Center will accomplish these goals by:

1. Leading and conducting innovative basic, clinical and epidemiologic research into the causes, mechanisms, and remedies of disease related to toxicants in the environment;

2. Enhancing understanding of the risks and utility of physical, biological and chemical agents and the specific mechanisms underlying their effects on health;

3. Serving as a resource to the State of Maine for concerns regarding health and the environment;

4. Training students and professionals in toxicology and related disciplines, and preparing them to assume positions of leadership and to respond to future challenges;

5. Establishing a nexus of university, government and industry for facilitating correspondence among scholarship, policy and product; and

and

6. Fostering multidisciplinary interactions and collaborations within the Center, among independent scientists with common interests, and with other Centers conducting similar efforts around the world.
