Community Outreach and Education
Outreach is an important activity of a University-based Center. MCTEH has only just begun to develop outreach, but several existing efforts will help with this process. MCTEH has a particular strength in K-12 outreach.
Drs. Duboise, Pelsue, Thompson and Ng have established a ScienceCorps K-12 teacher training program at USM. This program has been funded by NSF for a number of years and serves to link graduate students with science teachers in rural parts of the state.
Dr. Wise has been active in K-12 education for many years through his work on the national Society of Toxicology’s Paracelsus programs. High school students have been summer members in MCTEH laboratories for the past several years and several lab members travel to area middle schools for presentations regarding toxicology.
