USM continues to receive recognition for our hard work on
several fronts:
Last month, the Southern Maine Partnership, headquartered
in USM's College of Education and Human Development, was named
the 2005 recipient of the Richard Wisniewski Award for Excellence
in Teacher Education. Given by the Society of Professors of
Education, the award recognizes USM's significant contributions
to the theory and practice of teacher education. More information
on the Partnership is available at www.usm.maine.edu/smp.
The National Wildlife Federation has recognized USM for its
campus conservation promotion efforts with a Campus Ecology
Recognition Award for the 2003-2004 year. As a campus, USM
achieved its goal of developing and implementing USM FootPrint,
a Free Press column on sustainability issues.
USM's Office of Research Compliance was tapped by the Applied
Research Ethics National Association (ARENA) as a source for
Standard Operating Procedures for Human Subject Research.
The designation recognizes the work of USM's Institutional
Review Board (IRB), which seeks to ensure USM's research involving
human participants is well planned and ethical. ARENA has
named USM's IRB policies and procedures as examples of model
guidance materials for other IRB administrators in the process
of creating or improving their procedures.

USM USM to Receive $1.45 Million in Federal
Funding
Our efforts toward "Transforming USM" received a major boost
this month with an announcement that USM has secured $1.45
million in federal earmarks for 2005. This is particularly
encouraging in a year when fewer funds were available to a
greater number of requesting projects.
In FY05, USM will receive $1.2 million to help expand USM's
Maine Center for Toxicology and Environmental Health into
a nationally recognized and competitive center for studying
the health effects of contaminants that pollute the environment.
Also, USM's College of Nursing and Health Professions will
receive $250,000 to assist expansion efforts that include
specialized simulation labs in an effort to address Maine's
growing demand for skilled nurses.

Last month, the University of Maine System's Board of Trustees
granted USM permission to proceed with a two-year, $25-million
fund-raising campaign. This campaign, the largest in USM's
history, will allow us to strengthen USM as an academic institution
serving the needs of our region. At the center of this campaign
is the creation of a "University Commons" on the Portland
campus that includes new homes for USM's Muskie School of
Public Service, the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, and
expansion of the Osher Map Library. Additional funds will
support USM's endowment to foster academic programs, scholarships
and professorships, as well as the University's Annual Fund
to provide a broader base of annual operating support. More
information is available at www.maine.edu/botnov04.htm.

In addition to the $25-million fund-raising campaign, Trustees
also approved a $2-million project to expand USM's Lewiston-Auburn
College. Funding for USM's purchase and renovation of a 40-year-
old industrial building and its four acres of land next to
LAC's existing facility was provided through a voter-approved
bond proposal in 2003. This is particularly exciting news
as the expansion of LAC not only reflects an increasing demand
for academic services in the Lewiston-Auburn region, but also
USM's growing capacity to serve the educational needs of our
region.

Planning is well underway for the 2005 Thinking Matters Symposium,
USM's annual exhibition celebrating student research, scholarship
and creative achievement scheduled on April 21 and 22, 2005.
This year, the program committee hopes students from every
academic discipline will showcase their scholarly and creative
endeavors in the public forum. Faculty members are encouraged
to work with students in courses to develop presentations.
