Portland, ME - On Thursday, March 10, 2005, the USM Muskie School of
Public Service and Maine Women's Lobby will present the Women in Public
Life Forum, "Celebrating Women Leaders of Today, Cultivating Women Leaders
of Tomorrow," from 3:00 - 7:00 p.m. at the Holiday Inn by the Bay in Portland,
Maine.
The half-day forum will feature a workshop on how to advance women's
participation in public life. "Recent data shows us that the number of
women in the state legislature has declined," said Sarah Standiford, executive
director of the Maine Women's Lobby. "The time is now to work together
to increase women's participation in government and in their communities.
At the conference, we will develop actions that we can take to encourage
women to get involved and support them along the way."
Laura Liswood, a nationally recognized speaker, author, and advisor,
will present the keynote speech. Liswood is Secretary General of the Council
of Women World Leaders, a group composed of women presidents, prime ministers,
and heads of government. "Women's leadership must be nurtured and sustained
throughout our global institutions and governments, for the benefit of
all," said Jane Amero, member of the USM Muskie School Board of Visitors.
"We're delighted to welcome Laura Liswood to Maine to recognize the leadership
of women heads of state and to honor the role of women in public life."
Liswood has been a member of the International Women's Forum, Leadership
America, the board of the First Women's Bank of California, and the Washington
Women's Political Caucus. She co-founded The White House Project dedicated
to electing a woman to the US presidency, and is a senior advisor at Goldman
Sachs, a global investment bank.
