News ReleasesUSM to Participate in National Education Conference on Teacher Preparation August 12 , 2005Monday, August 15 and Tuesday, August 16, a panel from the University of Southern Maine will be at The George Washington University at the “Quality Teacher Preparation: Strong Academic Preparation for Teaching” meeting. The meeting is one of a series organized by the National Commission on Teaching and America’s Future (NCTAF) and sponsored by the Carnegie Corporation of New York. USM was one of only eight institutions invited to assemble a seven-member panel of campus representatives, state-level policy makers and public school district-level practitioners to discuss best practices for teacher preparation, and how the No Child Left Behind Act and the reauthorization of the Higher Education Act will affect teacher prepartion. On USM’s team will be USM’s President Richard L. Pattenaude, Dean of Education and Human Development Betty Lou Whitford, and Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences Devinder Malhotra. Commissioner of Education Susan Gendron, State Representative Constance (Connie) Goldman (D-Cape Elizabeth), South Portland High School Principal Jeanne Crocker, and Portland Public Schools Superintendent Mary Jo O’Connor will round out the team.
