News ReleasesFormer Colleague of Sen. Muskie to Speak at USMApril 8, 2005 Leon Billings, a close personal associate of Senator Edmund S. Muskie, will speak and lead a discussion, "Edmund S. Muskie's Legacy: Lessons for Today," at 7 p.m., Wednesday, April 13 in Room 506, University of Maine School of Law, Portland. His lecture is free and open to the public. Billings served as Muskie's chief strategist in the creation of monumental environmental laws, and ran Muskie's personal Senate office. When Muskie became Secretary of State, Billings accompanied him to the State Department, and continued to work with Muskie after his return to private life, until the former Governor, United States Senator, and Secretary of State died in 1996. Edmund S. Muskie began the first of his two successful terms as Governor of Maine fifty years ago. In 1958, he was elected U.S. Senator from Maine and served until he became Secretary of State (1980-1981). This is the first in a series of events presented by USM's Muskie School of Public Service to celebrate Muskie's public service contributions, and to learn from those lessons as we tackle the issues of today.
