USM is the Place for Writing this April:
Readings and a Book Release Party are Open to the Public

March 25, 2005

April will be a month for poetry buffs, writers and readers at the University of Southern Maine.

USM's English Department will host its annual Celebrate Writers series beginning with a free public reading by poets Betsy Sholl and Annie Finch at 7 p.m., Monday, April 11, on the Seventh Floor of USM's Glickman Family Library, Portland.

Sholl is a lecturer in English at USM and author of "Late Psalms" (University of Wisconsin, 2004). Finch is the new director of USM's Stonecoast Low Residency M.F.A. in Creative Writing, and is the author of "Calendars" (Tupelo, 2003), which was short listed for the Foreword Poetry Book of the Year award. This will be the first opportunity to hear Finch read at USM since her move to Maine last fall. For background on Finch, please see http://www.anniefinch.com. Books by both poets will be available for purchase at the event.

Celebrate Writers continues at 12 noon, Tuesday, April 12, in Room B of USM's Woodbury Campus Center, when USM writing faculty will read from their work. Readers include Jessica Anthony, Brenda Edmands, Amy Havel, and David Walker, among others. This event is also free and open to the public.

Celebrate Writers is designed to recognize USM faculty as well as USM's student writers. Wednesday, April 13 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., students from USM's creative writing classes will read their own prose and poetry in the Woodbury Campus Center Amphitheater, Portland.

Contributors from the 2005 edition of "Words & Images" also will read in the Woodbury Campus Center Amphitheater on the 13th from noon-1 p.m. "Words & Images" was established 25 years ago as a student-published journal of literary and visual arts. The journal is based on open-call submissions for poetry, prose and art, and includes interviews with nationally recognized writers and artists who have contributed significantly to their respective fields.

The "Words & Images" release party will take place from 7-9 p.m., Monday, April 18, in Space Gallery, 538 Congress St., Portland. The party will feature readings from Anne-Marie Oomen, author of "Pulling Down the Barn: Memories of a Rural Childhood" (Great Lakes Books), and Lewis Turco, author of "The Book of Forms: A Handbook of Poetics" (University Press of New England). Selected artwork from the publication will be on display, and the winners of the Andre Dubus Short Fiction Contest will also be announced at the release party. "Words & Images 2005" will be available for purchase at the party. There will be a reception and cash bar at the event.

The Glickman Family Library is celebrating Poetry Month this April by hosting readings by contributing poets from "Words & Images" and "The Southern Maine Review" at 12:30 p.m., Tuesday, April 26, on the Seventh Floor of the Library. "The Southern Maine Review" is published annually by USM to provide a forum for USM and University of Maine System communities, and the public.

Betsy Sholl will be on hand to present the "Words & Images" Stephen Dunn Poetry Awards to first-place winner Linda Dove, who writes and ranches in Skull Valley, Az., and second-place winner Katie Kingston, recipient of the Colorado Council on the Arts Literary Fellowship in Poetry. Both winners will read from their work. Other readers include "The Southern Maine Review" poets Kenneth Nye, a USM faculty member from Falmouth, and Carolyn Padula, a USM alumnus from Gorham
