Students Recognized at USM's 2004 Recognition Day Ceremonies

The following USM students received awards at the annual
2004 Recognition Day ceremonies this spring. Recipients are
listed below in alphabetical order by hometown. Students from
outside of Maine are listed by state at the end of this page.
Auburn:
Erin Bentley, a business administration major, was awarded
a Certificate of Excellence for performance at the highest
level in corporate finance. She is a 1996 graduate of Edward
Little High School and the daughter of Nora Morris of Auburn,
and John Bentley of Gray.
Carla J. Gill, a social behavioral science major, was awarded
the Lewiston-Auburn College Scholarship, the Sister s of Charity
Scholarship, and the Dr. Harlem Philippi Memorial Scholarship.
She attended New Hampshire College and lives with her partner
and their two children in Auburn.
Augusta:
Zachary Joseph Violette, a history major, was awarded the
USM Presidential Scholarship and the Esther Wood Scholarship.
He is a 2002 graduate of Cony High School and the son of Richard
and Linda Violette of Augusta.
Biddeford:
Christine L. Robida, a sociology and education major, received
the National Science Foundation Teaching Fellows Scholarship.
She is a 1986 graduate of Old Orchard Beach High School and
resides in Biddeford with her husband Ken Robida.
Boothbay:
Philip W. Schmidt, was awarded the Brian C. Hodgkin Scholarship.
He is a 2000 graduate of Boothbay Region High School and the
son of Carl and Lucy Schmidt.
Bremen:
Heather Lin Hicks, a sociology major, received the Richard
and Melissa Costello Scholarship and the Barbara Anne Payne
Scholarship. She is the daughter of Brian and Jeanna Quigley
of Bremen.
Bridgton:
Danielle Elyse Loring, a biology major, received the USM Honors
Program Scholarship for Academic Excellence. She is a 2003
graduate of Lake Region High School and the daughter of Wanda
and Ernest Loring of Bridgton.
Brunswick:
Stacy Marie Bisson, a French major, received an International
Exchange Scholarship for Study Abroad. She is a 2002 graduate
of Brunswick High School and the daughter of Jennifer and
David Bisson of Brunswick.
Buxton:
Tho Thi Snow, an electrical engineering major, received the
National Semi-Conductor Foundation Scholarship. She is the
daughter of Than V. Ngo and Lam T. Yen of Buxton, and lives
with her husband Victor in Gorham.
Calais:
Meredith J. Robitaille, a graduate counselor education major,
was named a College of Education and Human Development Clinical
Fellow. She graduated from Calais High School in 1997, and
resides in Portland with her husband Jeremy Robitaille. She
is the daughter of Jeffery and Leah McLean of Calais.
Cumberland:
Sharon Lindsey Sauerwald, an art education major, received
the Art Discipline Outstanding Student Award for Art Education.
She is a graduate of the University of Rochester and Oregon
State University. She lives in Cumberland with her husband
Mark Sauerwald.
Christine Curtis, a communication major, received the Communications
Department Outstanding Student Award. She is a graduate of
Vesper George School of Art and lives with her husband Verlon
Curtis in Cumberland.
Fairfield: Kira Lee Turnage, a communication major
with a minor in theatre, received both the Anthony Pearson
Scholarship and the Nancy C. Chandler Scholarship for Character.
She is a 2002 graduate of Lawrence High School and the daughter
of Nancy and David Turnage.
Falmouth:
Nathaniel G. Huber, an electrical engineering major, was awarded
the National Semiconductor Scholarship. He previously attended
Amherst College.
Gorham:
Kristin M. Popovics, a graduate extended teacher education
program major, received the Laura B. Hansen Scholarship. She
is the daughter of Joanne and Alexander Popovics of Gorham.
Sally Dunn Reagan, a graduate literacy major, received the
Lawrence H. and Pearl W. Fickett Award. She resides in Gorham
with her husband Patrick Reagan.
Gray:
Denise C. Duda, a studio art major and art history and writing
minor, received the USM Chapter of Associated Faculties of
the University of Maine System Scholarship. She is a Texas
Tech University graduate and lives in Gray with her husband
George Duda.
Nathanael L. Erde, a music education major, received the
Betty Atterbury Award, the Bertha F. Loomis '37 and Charles
H. Loomis '39 Scholarship. He is a 1999 graduate of Windham
Christian Academy and the son of David and Sally Erde of Gray.
Greene: Rhonda Marie Clukey, a social behavioral studies
and leadership and organization studies major, was awarded
the Mechanics Savings Bank Scholarship. She is a 1987 graduate
of Lewiston High School and the daughter of Barbara and Freeland
Witham of Greene.
Harpswell:
Aaron Keller, a chemistry major, was awarded the Robert Noyce
Scholarship. He is a graduate of the University of Connecticut,
and lives with his wife Danielle Keller in Harpswell.
Hollis:
Laura A. Osgood, a business administration major, was awarded
a School of Business Scholarship Fund Award, and was inducted
into Beta Gamma Sigma. She is a Greater Portland Christian
School 2001 graduate, and the daughter of Gary and Kathy Osgood
of Hollis.
Jefferson:
Elizabeth Richards, a doctoral molecular biology major, received
the School of Applied Science, Engineering and Technology
Outstanding Student Award for Applied Medical Sciences. She
lives with her husband Ernest Richards in Jefferson.
Kennebunk:
Ryan Lindsey Lessard, a sociology major, received the Franklin
Talbot Scholarship, the Gorham Alumni Chapter of Southern
Maine Scholarship, and the Sociological Imagination Award.
He a Kennebunk High School graduate and the son of Armand
and Celeste Lessard.
Jennifer Stanley, an extended teacher education preparation
major, was awarded the Robert Noyce Scholarship. She received
her undergraduate degree from Houghton College, and is the
daughter of Greg and Susann Stanley of Kennebunk.
Lewiston:
Erin Cloutier, a graduate school counseling major, was named
a College of Education and Human Development Clinical Fellow.
She is a 1998 graduate of the University of Maine at Farmington,
and resides in Lewiston with her husband Marco Cloutier.
Rebecca Lynn Lebrun, a natural and applied science and leadership
and organizational studies major, received the Mechanics Savings
Bank Scholarship. She is a 1995 graduate of Leavitt Area High
School, and lives with her husband Lee in Lewiston.
Salina Sultana Mannion, an accounting and finance major,
received the George D. Woodward Accounting Scholarship. She
is a 1998 graduate of Orange Park High School, and resides
in Lewiston with her husband Stephen Mannion.
Lovell:
Andrei Adams, a business administration major, received the
Beta Gamma Sigma Scholarship and the School of Business Scholarship
Fund Award. He received home schooling and is the son of Terry
and Rose Adams.
North Berwick: Bonnie A. Best, an environmental science
and policy major, received the L.L. Bean Scholarship. She
is the daughter of Frank and Dorothy Austin of North Berwick,
and lives with her husband Lynn D. Best.
New Gloucester:
Brenda D. Pinkham, a secondary mathematics major, received
the Robert Noyce Scholarship. She is a graduate of Brunswick
High School and previously attended Husson College. She resides
with her husband Martin Pinkham in New Gloucester.
North Waterboro:
Michael J. Slawiec, an industrial technology major, received
the Lawrence N. Cilley '16 Technology Scholarship. He is the
son of Barbara Slawiec of Warsaw, Poland and Boleslaw Slawiec
of North Waterboro, Maine.
Palmyra:
Melissa White, an industrial technology major with a concentration
in information communications technology, received the Clifford
A. Parsons Scholarship. She is the daughter of John and Darlene
White.
Pittsfield: Sadie Carrie Perkins, a sociology and
education major, received the Walter E. Russell Scholarship.
She is a 2000 graduate of the Maine Central Institute and
is the daughter of Jeff and Sandra Perkins of Pittsfield.
Poland:
Penny J. Sargent, an arts and humanities major, received the
Edna Frances Dickey Scholarship and the Sun Journal Scholarship.
She lives in Poland.
Portland:
Madia B. Allolding, a social work major, received the Bertha
F. Loomis '37 and Charles H. Loomis '39 Scholarship and the
Arthur and Judith Benoit Memorial Scholarship. She is a 1983
graduate of James G. Johnson Academy in Liberia.
Susan Louise Anderson, an extended teacher education program
major, received the Alice E. Toothaker Scholarship. She has
a B.A. in Global Studies from the University of Iowa, and
is the daughter of Judy and Art Anderson of West Des Moines,
Iowa.
Anya Cornell, an electrical engineering major, was awarded
the National Semiconductor Foundation Scholarship. She previously
attended the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, and lives
with her husband Paul Cornell in Portland.
Catherine Duclos, an adult education graduate major, received
the Ruth V. Conley '25 Scholarship. She is a 1982 graduate
of Portland High School and the daughter of former USM faculty
members Albert and Gloria Duclos, (deceased).
Martha Hernandez, a graduate clinical counseling major, was
named a College of Education and Development Clinical Fellow.
She holds an undergraduate degree from Ohio State University
and a MasterŐs in Organization Development from American University.
She resides in Portland with her husband David Stevenson.
Sara M. Karam, a graduate school counseling major, was named
a College of Education and Human Development Clinical Fellow.
She is a graduate of Albion College in Michigan, and resides
in Portland with her spouse Jody Brinser.
Anna Sarkisov, a nursing major, received the EA Center Memorial
Scholarship. She is a graduate of Yerevan Medical College
in Armenia, and lives with her husband Konstantin Sarkisov
in Portland.
Tara Levicy Schnitker, a nursing major, received the Dr.
Frances Bailey Scholarship. She is a graduate of Spanish River
High School in Florida and the daughter of Vickie Parsons
of Boca Raton, Florida.
Joseph T. Swanson, a philosophy major, received the Sapientia
Philosophy Service Award, the William Makenson Philosophy
Award, and the Outstanding Senior Award. He is a graduate
of Deering High School and the son of Mark T. and Lise Swanson
of Portland.
Deanna Marie Williams, a psychology major, received the Dr.
Francis Bailey Scholarship. She received her G.E.D in 1991
and is the daughter of Clara Williams of Portland.
Rangeley: Holly Marie Johnson, an accounting and finance
major, received the Electra McLain Brown Scholarship. She
is a 2001 graduate of Rangeley Lakes Regional School and the
daughter of Jeff and Cathy Johnson, formerly of Rangeley.
Saco:
Katie Mary Dutremble, a psychology and elementary education
major, received the Joan Martin Beaudry Memorial Grant and
the M. Ruth Perry '27 Endowed Scholarship. She is a 2002 graduate
of Thornton Academy and the daughter of Mary Eon of Saco,
and Larry Dutremble of Biddeford.
Scarborough:
Deandra Clark, a graduate clinical counseling major, was named
as one of the College of Education and Human Development Clinical
Fellows. She is a graduate of the University of Maine at Orono,
and the daughter of Dean and Cathy Clark of Scarborough.
South Portland:
Lori Anne Hutchins, a media studies major, received the USM
Alumni Association Scholarship. She is a 2000 graduate of
South Portland High School and the daughter of Charles Larry
and Kathleen Hutchins.
Kristin Rancourt, an education graduate major, received the
M. Ruth Perry '27 Endowed Scholarship. She is a 1998 graduate
of Messalonskee High School and a graduate of Bryant College.
She is the daughter of Peter and Sheila Rancourt.
Standish:
Sarah M. Braik, an extended teacher education program major,
received the Alice E. Toothaker Scholarship. She is a 1971
graduate of Northern Valley Regional High School.
Steep Falls: Chase Nicholas Colburn, a computer science
major, received the Student Alumni Scholarship and the Phillip
I. Milliken Scholarship. He is the son of Stan Colburn of
Portland, and Pat Johnson of Steep Falls.
Tenants Harbor:
Jessica Olivia Hupper, a communication and education major,
received the M. Ruth Perry '27 Endowed Scholarship. She is
a 2002 graduate of Georges Valley High School and the daughter
of Craig and Jill Hupper.
Thomaston:
Anna Judith Carney, a sociology major, was awarded the Phi
Mu Leadership Award. She is a 2001 graduate of Georges Valley
High School and the daughter of James and Ruth Carney of Thomaston.
Wales:
Tonia M. Gilley, a nursing major, received the Katherine Cross
Memorial Scholarship and the Gertrude L. Stone Scholarship.
She is a 1992 graduate of Monmouth Academy and the daughter
of David Gilley of Arundel, and Linda Gilley of Lewiston.
Keith Johnson, an electrical engineering major, received
the School of Applied Science, Engineering and Technology
Outstanding Student Award for Electrical Engineering. He is
a 1997 graduate of Central Maine Community College. He is
the son of Alice Johnson of North Yarmouth, and lives with
his wife Kimberly in North Yarmouth.
Westbrook:
William Grigorets, an industrial technology major, received
the Southworth International Scholarship. He and his family
live in Westbrook.
Christine M. Racine, a business administration major, received
the Charles N. Greene Scholarship and the Mary Purkis and
Horton P. Gilman Scholarship. She is a 1991 graduate of Falmouth
High School, and resides with her husband Peter Racine in
Westbrook.
West Bath:
Krista Varney, a special education graduate major, received
the Laura B. Hansen Memorial Scholarship. She holds an undergraduate
degree from Saint Anselm College, and is the daughter of Linda
and Gary Varney of West Bath.
West Newfield:
Karl T. Clapp, an industrial technology major and information
systems minor, received the Hollis W. Moore Technology Education
Award. He is the son of Kevin and Maureen Clapp.
Whitefield:
Keith Burton Marple, a computer science major, received the
School of Applied Science, Engineering and Technology Outstanding
Student Award for Computer Science. He is a graduate of Lincoln
Academy and the son of Anthony and Marianee Marple of Whitefield.
Wilton:
Warren McKean Evans, a graduate accounting major, was awarded
the Howard F. Greene Scholarship and the Philip and Joan Jagolinzer
Scholarship in Accounting. He received his undergraduate degree
from USM, and resides in Windham with his wife Patricia Rodrigue.
He is the son of Ruth and Glen Evans of Wilton.
Windham:
Adam Corriveau, a fine arts major, received the International
Exchange Scholarship for Study Abroad. He is the son of David
and Elaine Corriveau of Windham.
Donald Jeffrey Pride, a music performance major, received
the Blackwood Family Endowed Scholarship. He is a 1984 graduate
of Windham High School and the son of Mr. and Mrs. Donald
C. Pride of Windham.
Winter Harbor:
William C. Monroe, a mental health counseling graduate major,
received the John M. and Annie T. Sutton Scholarship. He resides
with his wife Elizabeth Monroe in Winter Harbor.
Wiscasset:
Rachel Kwantz, a psychology major, received the M. Ruth Perry
'27 Endowed Scholarship and the Portland Junior College Scholarship.
She is a 2000 graduate of Wiscasset High School and the daughter
of Lois and David Kwantz.
Yarmouth:
Christopher Jacobs, a graduate student in the extended teacher
education program, received the Robert Noyce Scholarship.
He received his undergraduate degree from Dartmouth College
and his master's from New York University.

Day Ceremonies
Manchester, Connecticut:
Elisa A. Haveles, a music education major, received the Frances
Howarth Scholarship and the Alice E. Toothaker Scholarship.
She is a 2001 graduate of Manchester High School and the daughter
of Ted and Anne Haveles of Manchester.
Brunswick, Georgia:
Jamie Hodgson, an extended teacher education program major,
received the Laura B. Hansen Memorial Scholarship. Hodgson
is a graduate of Georgia University and the child of Peter
Hodgson of Brunswick, Georgia, and Claudia Hodgson of New
Castle, Delaware.
Lanesboro, Massachusetts:
Shaun Richard Darrow, a criminology major, received the Dr.
Francis Bailey Scholarship. He is a 2001 graduate of Mount
Greyloch High School and the son of Richard and Sandi Darrow
of Lanesboro.
Newburyport, Massachusetts:
Stephanie Renaud, a graduate manufacturing systems major,
received the School of Applied Science, Engineering and Technology
Outstanding Student Award for Technology. She attended the
University of Maine at Orono. She is the daughter of Roger
and Donna Jones of Newburyport, and lives with her husband
Pierre Renaud in Lewiston, Maine.
Westborough, Massachusetts:
Kenneth Michael Suesse, a history major, received the Nora
and Grace Nason Scholarship. He is a 2001 graduate of Westborough
High School, and the son of Ken and Debbie Suesse of El Dorado
Hills, California.
Manchester, New Hampshire:
Rebecca DeSantis, a sociology and elementary education major,
received the Mary L. Hastings Scholarship and M. Ruth Perry
'27 Endowed Scholarship. She is a 2001 graduate of Manchester
High School and the daughter of Peter DeSantis of Candia,
and Jodi DeSantis of Manchester, New Hampshire.
Joanne C. Lester, an industrial technology major, received
the Northern Utilities Scholarship. She is the daughter of
Thomas and Alice Benard of Manchester, and lives with her
husband Edward Lester in Saco, Maine.
Hickesville, New York:
Robert D. Feinburg, an education major, was awarded the Laura
B. Hansen Memorial Scholarship. He is a graduate of the University
of New Hampshire, and lives with his wife Melanie Leavitt
Feinburg in Gorham, Maine.
Queensbury, New York:
Colleen A. O'Connor, a business administration major, received
the Certificate of Excellence in Marketing. She is a 2000
graduate of Queensbury High School and the daughter of Gary
and Mary O'Connor of Scarborough, Maine.
Erie, Pennsylvania:
Cynthia Ann Lasher, a graduate special education major, received
the M. Ruth Perry '27 Endowed Scholarship. She holds a 1979
undergraduate degree from Penn State University, and resides
in Brunswick, Maine with her children Anne and James.
Lincoln, Rhode Island:
Dawn Lane, a counseling graduate major, received the Dorothy
D. and Richard W. Moore Scholarship, the Dexter Huntoon Memorial
Award, and was named as a College of Education and Human Development
Clinical Fellow. She is a graduate of Salve Regina University,
and resides with her husband Michael Lane in Gray, Maine.
North Providence, Rhode Island:
Elizabeth S. Giammarco, a counseling graduate major, was named
a College of Education and Human Development Clinical Fellow.
She received her undergraduate degree from USM. She is the
daughter of Salvatore M. Giammarco (deceased) and Elizabeth
M. Giammarco.
