The Academic Council for Post-Holocaust Christian, Jewish
and Islamic Studies, housed at the University of Southern
Maine, announces the addition of new members of its national
and regional advisory boards.
Joining the national board are Rabbi A. James Rudin, senior
interreligious advisor to the American Jewish Committee and
a founder of the Center for Catholic-Jewish Studies at Florida's
St. Leo University; Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf, the imam of Masjid
al-Farah in New York City and founder of the ASMA Society,
a non-profit organization that strives to foster positive
American-Muslim cultural relations; and Rabbi Reuven Firestone,
professor of medieval Jewish and Islamic Studies and director
of graduate studies at the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute
of Religion in Los Angeles.
Joining the regional advisory board are Elisabeth Hoffman,
the president of the Catalyst Fund, an organization that supports
peace-making strategies, and Frannie Zilkha, a leader in volunteer
and philanthropic efforts in the greater Portland area.
Academic Council director, Abraham J. Peck, commented that
"the addition of these outstanding men and women to our national
and regional boards will increase the visibility and effectiveness
of the Academic Council. They will be involved in all aspects
of the Council's academic and public activities and its efforts
in creating a new and more positive relationship between Judaism,
Christianity and Islam in our region, our nation, and our
world."
The Academic Council is a collaborative project of the University
of Southern Maine, the Bangor Theological Seminary and St.
Joseph's College to redefine the nature of Christian, Jewish
and Muslim relations in Maine and throughout the United States.
The project is the only one of its kind in the country.
