WMPG Fat Tuesday, Mardi Gras Special, February 24
February 20, 2004
WMPG-FM 90.9 & 104.1, the non-commercial community radio
station at the University of Southern Maine, presents its
ninth annual Fat Tuesday Mardi Gras Special. On Tuesday, February
24, from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m., WMPG will broadcast the sounds
of New Orleans and Mardi Gras, including zydeco, Cajun, jazz
and junk music from the USM's Woodbury Campus Center in Portland.
Much more than music, the ninth annual Fat Tuesday celebration
includes a Cajun food contest featuring food from Portland
area restaurants competing with their versions of traditional
New Orleans style food. Admission to the Cajun food contest,
with the opportunity to vote for your favorite dish, is free
from 11 a.m.-7 pm. The Cajun food contest winner will be announced
at 8 p.m.
From 7 p.m. until 10 p.m., WMPG will present live Leroy Thomas
& the Zydeco Roadrunners, an authentic zydeco band from Louisiana
now based in Houston. Admission for the Leroy Thomas & the
Zydeco Roadrunners concert is a suggested $5 donation to WMPG
at the door.
WMPG has some of the most knowledgeable Cajun music DJs in
southern Maine. DJ David Babb co-authored the book "Let the
Good Times Roll! A Guide to Cajun and Zydeco Music" with former
WMPG
DJ Brian Rollins. Rollins, Babb, and all WMPG's blues DJs
will take part in the Fat Tuesday broadcast. For more information,
