Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Maine awards USM scholarships
June 8, 2004
Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Maine has awarded 10
scholarships of $1,000 each to students of USM's College of
Nursing and Health Professions.
The scholarships were awarded to full-time students committed
to working to meet Maine's health care needs, and who demonstrated
superior academic achievement and financial need. Pat Richards,
a vice president at Anthem, presented the awards at a ceremony
held earlier this spring. Anthem has provided $10,000 in scholarships
to the College of Nursing and Health Professions in each of
the past two years.
"This level of support is so important to our students,"
notes Jane Kirschling, dean of USM's College of Nursing and
Health Professions. "Many of them have made great sacrifices
to go to school, and these scholarships represent a significant
commitment to help them become qualified health care professionals."
USM's College of Nursing and Health Professions is the largest
nursing education program in Maine, with approximately 600
undergraduate nursing students and 100 graduate students.
The College also offers undergraduate programs in sports medicine
and therapeutic recreation.
The 10 students are: Posalind Ebelt, Jennifer Grant, Virginia
Kristl, and Rebecca Seeley, all of Portland; Stephanie Daggett
of Gorham; Lacey Donley of Standish; Deborah Dumoulin of Biddeford;
Agnes Torchio of South Freeport; Therese Horan of Sitka, Arkansas;
and Rebecca Travers of Waterford, Connecticut.
