USM School of Business Professor Named President of CPA
Society
USM Professor of Accounting George R. Violette has recently
been elected president of the Maine Society of Certified Public
Accountants (MSCPA). The MSCPA, established in 1924, represents
more than 800 CPA professionals throughout Maine who work
in public practice, government, industry and education. Violette
plans to travel around the state, meeting with MSCPA members
to discuss both current and evolving professional issues.
Violette, a resident of Portland, directs the USM School
of Business master's program in accounting that was opened
to meet the increased demand for accountants, and the new
state policy that requires students to attain 150 credit hours
before taking the CPA exam. In addition to teaching, Violette
is active in the American Institute of CPAs, the American
Accounting Association, and the American Taxation Association.
He has written numerous articles which have been featured
in such publications as The Journal of American Taxation,
The Accounting Educators Journal, and the CPA Journal.
