Surrenden Street Closed to Through Traffic

Beginning this Thursday, March 6, Surrenden Street, which intersects Bedford at the Free Press/WMPG Radio headquarters, will be blocked off so that people can no longer drive all the way down Surrenden from Bedford St. Drivers will, however, be able to turn from Bedford onto Surrenden to enter the parking lot (P-3) that runs along Bedford St. The change is being made as part of the parking garage construction project.

Barriers will be placed across Surrenden, just below the Surrenden St. entrance to the Bedford St. parking lot (P-3). Please note that Surrenden will be open to pedestrians. For a map of these streets, go to http://www.usm.maine.edu/mapportland.html.

During the development of the garage project, it was important to the city and university that the garage be designed so as not to generate excessive traffic through the neighborhood bounded by Surrenden, Chamberlain, Washburn and Deering streets.

Consequently, the concept of cutting off Surrenden was submitted and accepted as part of the project. Under the approved plan, the upper portion of Surrenden will serve as the direct entrance into the current parking lot and, when the project is completed, into the parking garage. Chamberlain, Washburn and the bottom half of Surrenden will become a self-contained loop, designed to protect the neighborhood from garage-related traffic. We also believe the traffic plan will create a safer and more direct entry point into the garage.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact Bob Caswell of Media and Community Relations, or construction engineer John Rasmussen of Facilities Management.
