Stonecoast Writers' Conference Offers Free Readings

Once again, bibliophiles and poetry lovers can enjoy some best-selling authors and aspiring writers as they give readings of their work at the University of Southern Maine's Stonecoast Writers' Conference. Now in its 24th year, Stonecoast is a resident conference running from Friday, July 18, through Sunday, July 27, in USM's Stone House in Freeport. Housing is on Bowdoin's campus in Brunswick, where the evening readings also take place.

Perhaps Stonecoast's most renowned alumnus is Carolyn Chute, who attended the conference prior to the publication of "The Beans of Egypt Maine."

This year novelists Dennis Lehane, author of the best-selling "Mystic River;" Jonathan Lethem, author of "Motherless Brooklyn," a New York Times Book Review Notable Book; and A. Manette Ansay, author of the Oprah Book Club selection, "Vinegar Hill"; are among the authors who will give readings from their work for conference participants and the public. Poets Stephen Dunn, winner of the 2001 Pulitzer Prize for Poetry, Dzvinia Orlowsky, and Betsy Sholl also will do public readings.

With a national reputation as a teaching conference, Stonecoast's mission is to foster talent and to improve student writing. On the faculty this year are agents and editors as well as writers. Admission is based on submission of a short manuscript in the desired area of study.

For more information on Stonecoast, contact USM's Summer Session at 780-5617.
