Free National Youth Sports Program for Low Income Children Still Has Openings

This summer will be the second year that the University of Southern Maine will be a host site for the federally-funded National Youth Sports Program (NYSP). Over 200 colleges nationwide offer this summer program, which has been in existence since 1969. NYSP runs from 8 a.m.-12:30 p.m., Mondays through Fridays, June 23 through July 28.

The program combines sport instruction with educational enrichment programs for children aged 10-16. Participants receive breakfast and lunch each day. Limited transportation is available. It is free for children in York and Cumberland counties whose families meet Department of Health and Human Services income guidelines.

Participating children receive a NYSP t-shirt, a medical examination (if necessary), accident medical insurance coverage, and the opportunity to interact with college students and staff.

For more information on the program at USM and registration materials, contact Christina Beaudoin at 228-8230. For more information about NYSP, see www.nyscorp.org/#.
