Falmouth's Kenneth Nelson Chairs USM Board

Longtime USM supporter, Kenneth M. Nelson, president of Nelson & Small, Inc., has been named chair of the University of Southern Maine Board of Visitors. The Falmouth resident succeeds Kenneth Ross, vice president of Clark Associates in Portland.

He has served as president of the USM Foundation Board of Directors and, with his wife Mary, co-chaired the USM Osher Map Library capital campaign, helping to raise $1.5 million to build the Map Library within the Glickman Family Library on USM's Portland campus. He was a leader in the effort to establish USM's electrical engineering program, and in 1989 his Portland-based company established the Nelson and Small Prize, presented yearly to a professor to recognize outstanding contributions to the program.

"Kenny Nelson was one of the first business and community leaders to realize that USM's quality is critical to the region's economic and cultural well-being," said USM President Richard L. Pattenaude.

The Maine Legislature in 1997 authorized each of the seven Universities within the University of Maine System to form its own advisory board to advocate for the institution, advise the president on community and campus needs, and review new programs and other proposals before they are submitted to the University of Maine System Board of Trustees.

Newly appointed members of USM's Board of Visitors include: Meg Baxter, president of United Way of Greater Portland; Jill C. Duson, president of Perkins Thompson Consulting and Portland City Councilor; Harold C. Pachios of Preti Flaherty Beliveau Pachios & Haley LLC; David B. Hawkes, '66, of Triplehawk, Inc., and chair of the USM Foundation; and William H. Pusey III of Camden National Bank, and chair of the USM Corporate Partners.
