Falmouth's Kenneth Nelson Chairs USM Board
Longtime USM supporter, Kenneth M. Nelson, president of
Nelson & Small, Inc., has been named chair of the University
of Southern Maine Board of Visitors. The Falmouth resident
succeeds Kenneth Ross, vice president of Clark Associates
in Portland.
Nelson, who received the 2002 USM Hilltop Award in recognition
of his commitment to the University. He has served as president
of the USM Foundation Board of Directors and, with his wife
Mary, co-chaired the USM Osher Map Library capital campaign,
helping to raise $1.5 million to build the Map Library within
the Glickman Family Library on USM's Portland campus. He was
a leader in the effort to establish USM's electrical engineering
program, and in 1989 his Portland-based company established
the Nelson and Small Prize, presented yearly to a professor
to recognize outstanding contributions to the program.
"Kenny Nelson was one of the first business and community
leaders to realize that USM's quality is critical to the region's
economic and cultural well-being," said USM President Richard
L. Pattenaude.
The Maine Legislature in 1997 authorized each of the seven
Universities within the University of Maine System to form
its own advisory board to advocate for the institution, advise
the president on community and campus needs, and review new
programs and other proposals before they are submitted to
the University of Maine System Board of Trustees.
Newly appointed members of USM's Board of Visitors include:
Meg Baxter, president of United Way of Greater Portland; Jill
C. Duson, president of Perkins Thompson Consulting and Portland
City Councilor; Harold C. Pachios of Preti Flaherty Beliveau
Pachios & Haley LLC; David B. Hawkes, '66, of Triplehawk,
Inc., and chair of the USM Foundation; and William H. Pusey
III of Camden National Bank, and chair of the USM Corporate
Partners.
