USM Students Active in Model UN
During a time of international conflict, a group of students
at the University of Southern Maine are active in the Model
UN Club, a club that advocates diplomacy over armed conflict.
Model UN Clubs for college and high school students worldwide,
employ a role-playing forum designed for students to debate
issues currently before the United Nations. They learn the
ways and means of global cooperation and effective international
decision making.
Early this spring a small group of University of Southern
Maine students traveled to the World Model United Nations
Conference in Heidelberg, Germany. Among them was Emily Monahan
Ainsworth, a 2000 graduate of Portland High School, who returned
winner of the prestigious Diplomacy Award. Julia Edwards,
a 2000 graduate of South Portland High School, and president
of USM's Model UN Club, and Jason Hammond, a 1994 graduate
of Gorham High School, also represented USM in Germany.
Hammond, the son of Nancy Jodrie, of Windham, and Robert
Hammond, of Winter Harbor, has not forgotten his Gorham roots.
He served as the Secretary General of the 2003 Maine Model
United Nations Conference held on USM's Gorham campus in May
for nearly 300 high school students from Maine, New Hampshire,
Massachusetts, and Connecticut.
USM students who are members of USM's Model UN Club helped
run the high school conference. They include: Jessica Fernald
of Casco, David E. Stearns of Westbrook, Timothy Griffin of
Little Compton, R.I., Kaitlin Jane Wright of Yarmouth, Elizabeth
Mann of Kittery, and Vanesa Saric, a graduate of Portland
High originally from Bosnia and now residing in South Portland.
These students study under Political Science Professor Lynn
Kuzma, who is advisor of USM's Model UN Club, teaches a "Modeling
the UN" course, and specializes in international relations.
