Author Speaks on Overcoming Violence Against Women and Racism
Michael Penn, a professor of psychology at Franklin & Marshall
College, Pennsylvania, and an affiliate professor of psychology
at Landegg International University in Switzerland will be
at the University of Southern Maine April 9-10 offering a
series of lectures and workshops on overcoming racism and
violence against women for students, faculty members, and
the public.
Penn is the author of "Overcoming Violence Against Women
and Girls: The International Campaign to Eradicate a World-Wide
Problem." He also has written on such subjects as transracial
adoption and the nature of healthy relationships. He is a
2002-2003 Libra Visiting Professor in USM's College of Education
and Human Development. The Libra Professorships is a program
funded by the late Elizabeth B. Noyce to provide endowed professorships
throughout the University of Maine System.
Wednesday, April 9
12 Noon, Room 301, Bailey Hall, Gorham Brown bag lunch
discussion on "The Ethics of Authenticity: Reflections on
the Nature of Healthy, Growth-Inducing Relationships." A brief
introduction of the work of the Authenticity Project which
promotes the development of our moral and spiritual capacities.
1:15-2:30 p.m. Room 301, Bailey Hall, Gorham Workshop
on "The Authentic Life: Reconceptualizing the Dynamics of
Power, Love, & Justice in Human Relationships."
4-5:30 p.m. Rooms ABC, Woodbury Campus Center, Portland
Lecture and book signing, "The Global Campaign to Eradicate
Violence Against Women and Girls."
Thursday, April 10
1:30-3 p.m. Room 1, Payson Smith Hall, Portland Discussion
on "Issues and Challenges in Eradicating Violence Against
Women & Girls."
4-5:30 p.m. Woodbury Campus Center Amphitheater, Portland
Public lecture, "The Journey Out of the Racial Divide: Race,
Culture and Community in the New Millennium."
