May 5, 2003 USM Mourns the Passing of Leon Bien

Leon Bien, a valued colleague and committed USM volunteer, died last Friday, May 2.

Leon served KeyBank in senior leadership roles for more than 20 years, and most recently worked at Citizens Bank as the vice president in charge of their government banking division. He was frequently called upon as a speaker on economic issues, and served on the Governor's Economic Forecasting Committee.

Many at USM know Leon best for his wonderful contributions as a faculty member in the School of Business, where students benefited from his inspired teaching and affectionate guidance. A faculty colleague said of Leon, "He was a very student-oriented professor, very caring. He was an all-around good teacher and first-rate person."

Leon also contributed his time and talents to many public service projects on behalf of St. Joseph's College, the Cancer Community Center, Mercy Hospital and many others. He was a longtime supporter of USM, serving most recently as chair of the successful $21 million "21st Century Campaign for Excellence."

As Leon told Mainebiz in an interview published in December, "I view USM as my adopted university. I believe that many of us who didn't graduate from USM have an obligation to promote USM in the community and see it grow."

Visiting hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m., this Tuesday, May 6 at the Conroy-Tully Funeral Home, 172 State St., Portland. Prayers will be recited at the funeral home Wednesday at 10:15 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at Holy Martyr's Catholic Church in Falmouth at 11 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, Leon's family has asked that memorial contributions be made to the USM Foundation, in care of the President's Office, P.O. Box 9300, Portland, 04104.
