USM NEWS ADVISORY: Raising Aspirations Among Middle Schoolers
Some 170 Maine middle school students are on USMÕs Gorham
campus this week for a range of programs designed to encourage
them to pursue a college degree. The USM visit is part of
a statewide program known as GEAR-UP, which works to prepare
low-income students for college.
The students will be at USM through Wednesday, June 25,
and then will spend the remainder of the week at Southern
Maine Community College. For more information on the entire

USM SCHEDULE:
Tuesday, June 24:
2:15 to 3:35, USM Bailey Hall, Gorham: Career sessions on
math, economics, social work and other fields. Two groups
of students also will tour Scarborough Marsh.
4 to 5:10 p.m., USM Bailey Hall, Gorham: Leadership building
exercises, theatre and sports presentations (these to held
in Theatre and Athletic Departments, respectively) computer-based
college searches, plus tours of Scarborough Marsh.
Wednesday, June 25:
1 p.m. to 2:10 p.m., USM Bailey Hall, Gorham: Sessions on
pottery /ceramics (this to be held in Art Dept.), biology,
team building and radio production.
2:15 to 3:25 p.m., USM Bailey Hall, Gorham: Sessions noted
above repeated, plus tours of Scarborough Marsh.
4 to 5:10 p.m., USM Bailey hall, Gorham: Session on computer-based
college searches, plus repeat of sessions noted above.
