WMPG-FM 90.9 & 104.1, the non-commercial community radio station at the University of Southern Maine presents their Eighth Annual Fat Tuesday all day Mardi Gras Special on WMPG. On March 4 beginning at 6:30am until 7pm, WMPG will broadcast the sounds of New Orleans and Mardi Gras including Zydeco, Cajun, Jazz and Funk music.

Much more than music, WMPG will host this event at the USM Woodbury Campus Center in Portland. The Eighth Annual Fat Tuesday celebration includes a Gumbo, Jambalaya and Cajun food contest. Traditional New Orleans style food will be served free from 11am-7pm with the Gumbo, Jambalaya and Cajun Food contest winners announced at 7pm. Last year's contestants included the Bayou Kitchen, Uncle Billy's, Gritty McDuffs, Beale Street Bar B Q, Black Tie, Q St. Diner, Great Lost Bear, Handmade Desserts, Big Sky Bakery and cooks who have dared to risk exposing their own secret home recipes like Patrick Andrews and Brian Lewis. Registration deadline for the contest is March 3. Call 780-4424.

WMPG has some of the most knowledgeable Cajun music DJs around. WMPG DJs, Brian Rollins and David Babb co-authored the book "Let the Good Times Roll! A Guide to Cajun and Zydeco Music." Rollins, Babb and all WMPG's blues DJs will take part in the Fat Tuesday Broadcast on March 4.

Once again WMPG will announce the Maine Mardi Gras King and Queen. WMPG listeners will be asked to nominate staff from local non-profit organizations. Nominations can be phoned in at 780-4424. The winning King and Queen will preside over WMPG's Fat Tuesday party.
