Fast Track Nursing Students Graduate at USM
At a time when most students are getting ready to begin
school, there are 25 students preparing to graduate this Friday
from the University of Maine College of Nursing and Health
Professions. Eighteen of these students are the first who
enrolled in a 15-month Accelerated Bachelor's of Science in
Nursing Program designed to attract people to the nursing
profession.
USM's School of Nursing began the program in the summer of
2002 enabling people who hold degrees in fields other than
nursing to earn a bachelor's degree in nursing in 15 month's
time by attending classes year round. This fast-track nursing
program is designed to address the state wide and national
nursing shortage.
About 50 percent of the students graduating Friday evening
have already secured positions in the nursing field. The program
has become so popular, a third cohort will begin classes in
September, joining the second group that began their studies
this past May.
