NEWS ADVISORY
First Annual Maine Deaf Film and Video Festival
at USM
The University of Southern Maine Linguistics Department
and the American Sign Language Club of Maine are hosting a
film and video festival that features two days of films, videos,
and moderated discussions by Deaf filmmakers, educators, and
members of the Deaf community. The festival begins 6 p.m.,
Friday, May 30, and will run 1 -10:30 p.m., Saturday, May
31, in USM's Luther Bonney Auditorium, Portland.
The festival will include 13 films ranging in style from
documentary to animation, fantasy, drama, comedy, romance
and dance. Each genre offers opportunities for the Deaf artists
who made them to present original statements about the Deaf
experience. Cultural and technological changes since the early
days of Hollywood enable the Deaf to tell their own story
in their own language and in their own way. As a result, what
has come to be called the "New Deaf Cinema" has emerged. Films
will be interpreted for both hearing and deaf audiences as
appropriate.
For complete information about the festival, contact Mike
Wing, USM Linguistics, at 780-5957.
