Ribbon Cutting for New USM Biosciences Research Wing
The University of Southern Maine will open the new Biosciences
Research wing, a new addition to the Science Building on Monday,
June 2. Designed by the architectural firm Symmes Maini &
McKee Associates of Cambridge, Mass., and built by Pizzagalli
Construction of South Portland, work began on the project
in March of 2002.
The $11.4 million addition, which was funded as part of
the state's R&D initiative, features 12 research labs and
support facilities on a basement level and two floors above
ground.
It was designed to provide facilities so researchers can
attract external grants and generate the teaching and research
needed to support this region's evolving industries, particularly
in the biotech sector.Ê One of those researchers is former
Yale molecular toxicologist John Wise, who brought to USM
a team of researchers and $2 million in external funding to
work on such issues as risk factors for cancer and childhood
asthma. Wise, a 1983 graduate of Portland High, told us that
he returned to his native state because, "I've always thought
I'd come back to Maine if the state ever got serious about
biomedical research."Ê
