USM Alumni Association Award Recipients Named

David Swardlick of Yarmouth, Maine State Representative Joseph C. Brannigan of Portland, and Richard and Carolyn McGoldrick of Cape Elizabeth, will receive the University of Southern Maine Alumni Association's top awards at the annual Alumni Association Awards Luncheon, scheduled for this Thursday, June 26, in Falmouth.

Swardlick is the recipient of the USM Hilltop Award, which was established in 1967 to recognize alumni and friends who demonstrate outstanding volunteer commitment to the university. He is the founder and president of Swardlick Marketing Group and has been a longtime supporter of USM and its School of Business.

He was one of the driving forces behind the creation of the School of Business' Executive Forum, which will hold its eighth annual event this fall. A member of the Business School's Advisory Council since 1991 and chair from 2000-02, he worked with faculty to develop the School's mission and marketing strategy.

Richard and Carolyn McGoldrick are the recipients of the Community Service Award, established in 1968 to recognize alumni and friends for distinguished service to the community, state, nation or world. They have worked tirelessly for the Portland Boys and Girls Club--Carolyn is on the board of directors and they are co-chairs of the auction committee. Richard is the president of Commercial Properties, Inc., a real estate firm located in Portland. Carolyn has taught school in Maine and Massachusetts, and serves on the board of North Yarmouth Academy, in addition to her other professional and volunteer activities in education.

Joseph Brannigan, executive director of Shalom House, Inc., is the recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award, an award that recognizes alumni for significant accomplishments or distinguished service to their community, state or nation. Brannigan has served in the Maine Legislature since 1978, either in the House of Representatives or the Senate. Shalom House has grown under his leadership from a small organization to a regional nonprofit that helps hundreds of people with severe mental illness find ways to lead fulfilling lives. He received a master's in counseling education from USM in 1972.
