USM Alumni Association Award Recipients Named
David Swardlick of Yarmouth, Maine State Representative
Joseph C. Brannigan of Portland, and Richard and Carolyn McGoldrick
of Cape Elizabeth, will receive the University of Southern
Maine Alumni Association's top awards at the annual Alumni
Association Awards Luncheon, scheduled for this Thursday,
June 26, in Falmouth.
Swardlick is the recipient of the USM Hilltop Award, which
was established in 1967 to recognize alumni and friends who
demonstrate outstanding volunteer commitment to the university.
He is the founder and president of Swardlick Marketing Group
and has been a longtime supporter of USM and its School of
Business.
He was one of the driving forces behind the creation of
the School of Business' Executive Forum, which will hold its
eighth annual event this fall. A member of the Business School's
Advisory Council since 1991 and chair from 2000-02, he worked
with faculty to develop the School's mission and marketing
strategy.
Richard and Carolyn McGoldrick are the recipients of the
Community Service Award, established in 1968 to recognize
alumni and friends for distinguished service to the community,
state, nation or world. They have worked tirelessly for the
Portland Boys and Girls Club--Carolyn is on the board of directors
and they are co-chairs of the auction committee. Richard is
the president of Commercial Properties, Inc., a real estate
firm located in Portland. Carolyn has taught school in Maine
and Massachusetts, and serves on the board of North Yarmouth
Academy, in addition to her other professional and volunteer
activities in education.
Joseph Brannigan, executive director of Shalom House, Inc.,
is the recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award,
an award that recognizes alumni for significant accomplishments
or distinguished service to their community, state or nation.
Brannigan has served in the Maine Legislature since 1978,
either in the House of Representatives or the Senate. Shalom
House has grown under his leadership from a small organization
to a regional nonprofit that helps hundreds of people with
severe mental illness find ways to lead fulfilling lives.
He received a master's in counseling education from USM in
1972.
