Allen Family Honored at USM's Muskie School of Public Service
USM's Muskie School announced today that over $135,000 has
been raised to honor the Allen family, a respected Maine lineage
of public servants, including the late Charles W. Allen, his
son U.S. Representative Tom Allen and Neal W. Allen, executive
director of The Greater Portland Council of Governments. The
funds will be used to name the Allen Family Classroom, and
were raised as part of a larger capital campaign to build
a world-class facility to house the Muskie School and will
the school to expand education programs, increase policy research
capacity and broaden outreach and public service activities.
Major gifts were received from Pierce Atwood, Drummond Woodsum
& MacMahon, individuals from those firms, and Peoples Heritage
Bank. Charles W. Allen was a Pierce Atwood attorney for over
45 years, and Tom Allen was an attorney at Drummond Woodsum
& MacMahon for 19 years. Other gifts have come from family,
friends and colleagues from across the country.
"The Allen family has served the State of Maine for over
100 years," said Pamela Plumb, former Portland mayor and member
of the Allen Family Naming Committee. "We are pleased to honor
this important family of public servants for their numerous
contributions. This permanent tribute will remind generations
to come of the many ways that we can serve our communities."
The Allen Family has a long history of public service beginning
with Neal W. Allen (1884-1976), who led the adoption of the
current Portland city council-city manager structure. Charles
W. Allen (1912-2003), a Pierce Atwood attorney led the Portland
City Council's efforts to end discrimination in Portland clubs
and organizations during the 1960s. The current generation
boasts Tom Allen, Maine's First District U.S. Congressman,
and Neal W. Allen, executive director of The Greater Portland
Council of Governments.
The Allen Family Classroom will hold a display case dedicated
to the history of the family's contributions to the state,
including pictures and memorabilia. The classroom will be
located in the proposed Muskie building to be located on the
University of Southern Maine's Portland campus, adjacent to
the Joel and Linda Abromson Community Education Center (currently
under construction) and the Glickman Family Library.
