Harvard Club & USM Business School Sponsor Lecture on Future of Capitalism

Harvard professor and author Shoshana Zuboff will offer a glimpse into the future of capitalism at a free lecture scheduled for 7:45 to 9 a.m., Friday, February 21, in Luther Bonney Auditorium on USM's Portland campus.

The USM School of Business and the Harvard Business School Club of Maine are sponsors of the event. For more information, call the USM School of Business at 780-4668. Reservations are appreciated, but not necessary.

Zuboff will present her vision of the future of capitalism as presented in her and James Maxmin's new book, "The Support Economy: Why Corporations Are Failing Individuals and the Next Episode of Capitalism" Maxmin also is scheduled to attend.

Refreshments, book purchase and signing, and discussion with the authors will begin at 7:15, followed by the formal presentation at 7:45. The program will conclude by 9 a.m.

"The Support Economy" starts with the premise that people have changed more than the corporations upon which their well-being depends. In the chasm that now separates the new individuals from the old organizations is the opportunity to forge a capitalism suited to our times and so unleash a vast new potential for wealth creation.

"The Support Economy" is considered the first book to critically examine how managerial capitalism has outlived the society it was once designed to serve. It successfully achieved the efficient production of goods and services, write the authors, but today's individuals want more. The next leap forward in wealth creation depends upon developing a new capitalism that speaks to the needs of people today.

What people want is what the authors call "deep support." Today's consumers, they contend, want advocates not adversaries, and relationships not anonymous transactions. They seek to be freed from the time-consuming stress and personal defeat that accompany so many commercial exchanges.

Zuboff, author of "In The Age of the Smart Machine," has been featured in The New York Times, Business Week and many other publications. Maxmin, her husband, has been the CEO of Volvo, Thorn EMI, and Laura Ashley.
