USM Announces Environmental Literacy Awards for Faculty and Students
Professor Emeritus of History Fred Padula, who taught at USM for 27 years and specialized in Latin American history, has generously funded two awards for environmental literacy this year.
Sponsored by the USM Environmental and Economic Sustainability
Committee, there will be three Student Awards for Environmental
Literacy of $1,000
each for winners of a student essay contest. The topic of
the 1,000-1,200 word essay is how the USM community can use
energy, or material resources, more sustainably.
The Committee will also give three awards to faculty members who promote environmental literacy by creating or modifying a course during the 2002-03 academic year. There will be a $1,000 award given when environmental literacy is a primary course objective, and two $500 awards for courses where environmental literacy is an important, but not primary, course objective.
The entry deadline for both contests is March 1, and the awards will be announced on April 22, 2003, Earth Day. For more information, contact Dudley Greeley, USM's environmental & economic sustainability coordinator, or see www.usm.maine.edu/~artz/
