USM Reflects on 9/11
The University of Southern Maine will remember the tragic attacks of 9/11 with a variety of events planned throughout the day. President Pattenaude has requested that professors and employees share in a moment of silence at 8:46 a.m., the time the first plane crashed into the World Trade Center, remembering those lost in the attacks.
USM's Gorham-based School of Music will ring the bell in
Corthell Hall's tower at 8:45 a.m., followed by an 8:46 a.m.
performance of a section of Mozart's "Requiem." This is part
of a world-wide event on September 11—the "Rolling Requiem"
(described at the Web site www.rollingrequiem.org/).
Also on the program is a performance of a commissioned piece for horn and piano, "Memoria" by USM composer J. Mark Scearce featuring USM's John Boden on horn.
USM's radio station, WMPG (90.9 FM), plans to broadcast the 9/11 performances live.
Another composition on the 9/11 theme by Mark Scearce will be performed at Washington D.C.'s National Cathedral by the Portland Chorale Arts Society on September 15.

The campus community can reflect on the effects of 9/11 in a variety of ways including a noon event, led by USM Interfaith Chaplain Andrea Thompson McCall, in the Woodbury Campus Center Amphitheater, Portland, and an 8 p.m. candlelight vigil on the lawn of Upton-Hastings Hall in Gorham. Both of these events will be followed by facilitated discussions led by USM Counseling Center staff.
Other ways the campus will acknowledge the day include ribbon making (purple for the survivors and families of the victims; white for peace and hope), and posters where people can list positive acts they have undertaken in response to 9/11 events. It is hoped that at least 911 acts will be listed. For more information on these events, please contact Andrea Thompson-McCall at 228-8284.
