News ReleasesUSM Southworth Planetarium Receives 2008 Best of Portland Award June 19, 2008 U.S. Local Business Association’s Award Plaque Honors the Achievement WASHINGTON D.C., June 10, 2008 – The University of Southern Maine Southworth Planetarium has been selected for the 2008 Best of Portland Award in the Planetarium category by the U.S. Local Business Association (USLBA). Founded in 1970, USM's Southworth Planetarium offers programs for school and civic groups and the general public. Each year, more than 20,000 adults and students attend programs at Southworth, including some 17,000 K-12 students attending school group showings. The Southworth Planetarium also offers other outreach programs, including enrichment courses in astronomy, teacher workshops, general presentations, hands-on activities, and astronomical observations.
