USM’s Third Annual Knap-In A Fun Family Event in Gorham

April 16, 2008

On Saturday, April 26, the University of Southern Maine’s Geography-Anthropology Student Association is hosting their third annual Knap-In, a daylong event honoring the art of crafting tools from stone. This family friendly event will run from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. at USM’s Bailey Hall, Gorham. Activities include demonstrations of flint knapping techniques and opportunities to try out both flint knapping and spear throwing. Demonstrations on fire starting and pottery making and a GPS scavenger hunt round out the day.  Display booths will feature Maine artisans and archaeological information.

Flint knapping is the ancient practice of creating stone tools. This increasingly popular art form has spawned national publications, Web sites, and gatherings called Knap-Ins. In 2006, USM’s Geography-Anthropology Student Association held Maine’s first knap-in.

This event is free and open to the public with a recommended donation to the Geography-Anthropology Student Association to help defray costs. For more information, call USM’s Geography-Anthropology Department at 780-5321 or visit http://www.usmknapin.com/.
