USM Writer’s Conference Offers Free Public Readings

The University of Southern Maine's Stonecoast Writers' Conference, now in its 29th year, will again offer the public an opportunity to hear writers of national distinction at free evening readings held at Bowdoin College in Brunswick from Monday, July 21, through Friday, July 25.

Among this year’s faculty is Maine’s Poet-Laureate Betsy Sholl. Sholl, a USM lecturer in English is the author of five books including "Late Psalm." Sholl, who has been referred to as a jazz poet, received an artist fellowship in 1994 from the National Endowment for the Arts’.

USM 2008 Stonecoast Writer's Conference Public Readings Schedule
All Stonecoast readings are free and open to the public. Readings take place in Brunswick at Bowdoin College. Question and answer sessions will follow the readings.

Monday, July 21
7:30 - 8:30 p.m. – Short-fiction writer Dianne Benedict and novelist Peter Behrens will be reading in the Dagget Lounge in Thorne Hall, Bowdoin College 780-5072.

Tuesday, July 22
7:30 - 8:30 p.m. – Maine Poet Laureate Betsy Sholl and a special guest will be reading in the Main Lounge in Moulton Union, Bowdoin College, 780-5072.

Wednesday, July 23
7:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. – Stonecoast student readings in the Main Lounge in Moulton Union, Bowdoin College, 780-5072.

Thursday, July 24
1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. – Emerging Maine writers Elise Juska and Christian Barter will be doing a midday panel in the Main Lounge in Moulton Union, Bowdoin college, 780-5072.

Thursday, July 24
7:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. – Novelist and short fiction writer Elise Juska, poet Christian Barter, and memoir writer Jaed Coffin will be reading in the Main Lounge in Moulton Union, Bowdoin College, 780-5072.

Friday, July 25
7:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. – Non-fiction writer and memoir writer Maria Flook and poet Major Jackson will be reading in the Main Lounge in Moulton Union, Bowdoin College, 780-5072.
