New USM Residence Hall Hosts Workshop on Global Warming Solutions

January 23, 2008

USM’s first LEED certifiable residence hall will host a series of free workshops from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Thursday, January 31, to explore global warming solutions.  The presentations will be held as part of the nationwide teach-in, “Focus the Nation” (www.focusthenation.org).  “Focus the Nation” is a national educational initiative dedicated to engaging interdisciplinary discussion about global warming.

The entire day is free and open to the public.  Events will be held in the John Mitchell Center, the Brooks Student Center and the new USM residence hall, which offers students programs on sustainable living practices.  All locations are on the Gorham campus.  Among the events will be an environmentally friendly vendor fair and a buffet, sampling local low-carbon foods in the Brooks Student Center. Dylan Vorhees from the Natural Resources Council of Maine will be keynote speaker for the morning.  Breakout sessions include transportation and global warming, impacts of climate change on subsistence activities, and legal responses to climate change, among others.

For more information contact USM’s Alicia Menard at (207) 780-5630.  For a complete schedule of events visit www.usm.maine.edu/reslife/slc.
