News ReleasesUSM Students Organize Earth Day Fair April 15, 2008 USM’s Residential Life Sustainability Committee, a group of students and staff, are organizing an Earth Day Fair that will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Thursday, April 24, in the lower level of the Brooks Student Center, Gorham. The event is free and open to the public. Among the exhibitors are a near-zero emissions car from Patriot Subaru, Portland Trails, Portland Food Co-operative, USM’s Muskie School Community Planning and Development Program, and other organizations and businesses that promote sustainable living. USM’s Residential Life Sustainability Committee has been running a “Think Outside the Bottle” educational campaign all month, designed to shed light on the environmental issues surrounding bottled water. The committee will sponsor a “Tap Water Challenge” taste test allowing participants to choose their favorite water in a blind taste test that will pit tap water against bottled brands. They also plan to weave a trail throughout Brooks Student Center of empty water bottles collected from USM residence hall trash and recycle bins during a one-month period, demonstrating the amount of plastic wasted when bottled water is purchased. For more information, contact Alicia “Leash” Menard, residence hall coordinator of USM’s New Hall at 780-5630.
