News ReleasesUSM Earth Day Fair Features Water Tasting April 22, 2008 Does premium bottled water taste better than tap water? Is it healthier, more pure and worth the energy and resources used to bottle and transport it to stores? That is among the questions that will be answered by the “Tap Water Challenge” water tasting at USM’s Earth Day Fair. The fair will take place from 11 a.m.-2 p.m., Thursday, April 24, in USM’s Brooks Student Center, Gorham. For more information, call Alicia “Leash” Menard, residence hall coordinator of USM’s New Hall at 780-5630. USM’s Residential Life Sustainability Committee, a group of students and staff, have been promoting a “Think Outside the Bottle” campaign all month which is designed to shed light on the environmental issues surrounding bottled water. In addition to the “Tap Water Challenge” the committee will display water bottles collected for a month from residence hall trash and recycling bins, demonstrating the amount of resources used to package bottled water. Other Earth Day Fair exhibitors include a near-zero emissions car from Patriot Subaru, Portland Trails, Portland Food Co-operative, USM’s Muskie School Community Planning and Development Program, and other organizations and businesses that promote sustainable living.
