USM Panel Discussion Examines Artistic Expression and Free Speech Within the University

The University of Southern Maine is hosting a panel discussion examining the complementary, and sometimes competing, demands for diversity, artistic expression, and free speech within a university community. “The Limits of Diversity: Disturbing Art Disturbing Spectators” will take place from 4-5:30 p.m., Thursday, November 1, in the University Events Room of USM’s Glickman Family Library on the Portland campus.  This event is free and open to the public.

This panel is part of the 10th anniversary celebration of USM’s Jean Byers Sampson Center for Diversity in Maine and is co-sponsored by USM’s 2007-08 Duclos Convocation on Academic Freedom. Panelists include
Erica Rand, Bates professor of art and visual culture and of women and gender studies; Eileen Eagan, USM associate professor of history; Derek Jackson, artist; Daniel Chard, USM student; and Abraham Peck, USM scholar-in-residence, Judaica Collection of the Sampson Center.  The panel will be moderated by Howard Solomon, USM scholar-in-residence, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Collection of the Sampson Center.
