Business Leaders Named To Head USM School of Business Advisory Council

February 27, 2008

Kent A. Peterson, CEO of Fluid Imaging Technologies, Inc., and Robert R. Cooper, Jr., president of Bisson Transportation, Inc., have been named chair and vice-chair, respectively, of the USM School of Business Advisory Council.

The Council is a 21-member group representing many of Maine’s best-known businesses, formed to provide feedback and support to the dean of the USM School of Business.

Peterson of Fluid Imaging Technologies, a company now based in his hometown of Yarmouth, specializes in a line of continuous imaging flow cytometer instruments known as FlowCAM®. These instruments microscopically analyze particles and cells as they flow through the devices, which are used in oceanographic sciences, as well as in such industrial applications as food production and petrochemicals.

Peterson, a graduate of Boston University and the University of Denver, is active in numerous civic and business organizations, among them the American MENSA Society, the Maine Compact for Higher Education and formerly served on the Portland Regional Chamber of Commerce, the Governor’s Advisory Council on International Trade and the Yarmouth School Committee.

Cooper, a resident of South Portland, is president and owner of Bisson Transportation, Inc., headquartered in West Bath, one of New England’s largest moving, storage and truckload freight companies.

The graduate of Colby College and The Columbia University Graduate School of Business serves on a number of not-for-profit boards including: Christian Leaders in Maine Business (CLIMB), Positive 89.3 FM, The Root Cellar and the Maine Health and Higher Educational Facilities Authority.

“A distinguishing characteristic of the USM School of Business is our partnerships with Maine’s business community,” said Dean James B. Shaffer. “Thanks to Kent’s and Bob’s leadership, the Advisory Council will ensure that we offer both our undergraduate and graduate students a mix of classroom and real world experiences.”
