Participants Needed for USM Study on Adult Children Caring for Aged Parents October 25 , 2007 University of Southern Maine Assistant Professor of Nursing Bonnie Cashin Farmer is launching a new study that will lead to better understanding of what would help adult children care for aging and failing parents. Participants are needed to attend a one-time two-hour group discussion with other caregivers at which they will share their experiences. Participants need to be providing, or have provided in the past, some level of care, for an aging and failing parent. The care provided need not to have been in the caregiver’s home. A one-time discussion group for study participants will be held 4:30-6:30 p.m.,Tuesday, November 6, in Damariscotta. Another group will meet 4:30-6:30 p.m., Tuesday, November 27, on USM’s Portland campus. Other dates, times and locations will be available in the Brunswick and Lewiston-Auburn areas. Please register by calling Bonnie Cashin Farmer at 753-6589. Those 85 and over, are the most rapidly growing older adult age group in the United States. As individuals age, increased frailty, chronic disease, and needs for varying levels of care become a reality for most families. Families are providing most of the care for the very old. Parent care has indeed become a common occurring experience for many adult children. The purpose of this study is to better understand what would help adult family members better care for the very old with failing health. The results of the study will be shared with all participants. For registration, more information, and questions please call: Bonnie
