The Fulbright Program has existed since 1946, when it was signed into law by President Truman. The Fulbright Scholar Program sends scholars and professionals to over 140 countries a year, where they lecture and conduct research. Fulbright scholars apply and are chosen based on their academic merit and leadership potential. They must have a Ph.D. and experience teaching at the college level. Fulbright scholars are awarded grants that range from three months to a full academic year. Laima Srouginis of Peaks Island, is a lecturer in USM’s English Department. She will be teaching creative writing at Vilnius University, Lithuania from September 2007 to June 2008. Robert Louden of Portland, is a professor in the Philosophy Department. His summer grant was for a special seminar within the Fulbright Program, the German Studies Seminar. The annual three-week seminar focused on Germany’s place in the European Union this year. Louden extended his stay to conduct research on philosopher Imanuel Kant. He has researched extensively in Germany throughout his career.
