Media Invited to View Maine Artist Paint in USM Gallery

March 4, 2008

Gideon Bok, USM’s 2008 Visiting-Artist-In-Residence, has set up a painting studio in the Art Gallery, located at the College Ave., entrance to the Gorham campus.  He’s brought his easy chair, guitar, and stereo (he prefers vinyl to digitally produced music) to the gallery where he is working on canvases, one of which will become part of USM’s permanent collection.  Visitors who come to the gallery during the hours Bok is painting may find themselves in a finished painting.

Bok will be painting in the Gallery 2-4 p.m., Wednesdays, March 5, 12, and April 2. The media is invited to interview him about this project during these times.  Please call Director of Exhibitions and Programs Carolyn Eyler at 780-5008 to confirm.

Your viewers will be interested to see a Maine artist with studios in Portland and Rockland working as he allows his music to influence the mood, titles, and elements featured in his paintings. Finished paintings hang on the walls in a Bok exhibit titled “Analog.” He is represented by Plane Space Gallery of New York and Alpha Gallery in Boston.

The mission of USM’s Visiting-Artist-in-Residence program (established in 1986) is to allow students, faculty and the USM community the opportunity to interact with professional artists outside of USM’s Art Department while adding significant works to USM’s permanent collection.
