USM Recognizes Scholarship Students

August 20, 2007

The following USM students were awarded scholarships for 2007-2008 academic year. Recipients are listed below in alphabetical order by hometown. The University of Southern Maine serves some 10,500 students with campuses in Portland, Gorham and Lewiston-Auburn. 

Auburn:
Theresa L. Arita, a graduate student in school counseling, has been awarded a USM College of Education and Human Development Clinical Fellows Scholarship.

Tyler Sperry, a business administration major, was awarded the USM - Portland Ballet Scholarship, the Duane Wood Scholarship, and the USM General Achievement Scholarship. Sperry is a 1999 graduate of Edward Little High School and the son of Mitch and Carlene Sperry of Auburn.

Biddeford:
Karen A. Belanger, a psychology and education major, was awarded the Richard and Melissa Costello Scholarship. Belanger graduated from Biddeford High School in 1990.  She is the daughter of Roger and Jackie Belanger of Biddeford.

Bridgton:
Karen Elise Knox, a graduate student in literacy, was awarded the Margaret McKenna Memorial Scholarship. She is the daughter of Claire and Jim Knox of Bridgton.

Brunswick:
Christina Bilodeau, an environmental science major, was awarded the Anthony Pearson Scholarship and the NiSource Charitable Foundation Scholarship. Bilodeau is a 2005 graduate of Brunswick High School.  She is the daughter of Ann and Norm Bilodeau, also of Brunswick.

Tamara P. Watson, a Lewiston-Auburn College social and behavioral sciences major, was awarded the Stewart Belknap Hamblen 1924 Scholarship. Watson resides with her husband, David Watson, in Brunswick and is the daughter of Maureen Perkins of Freeport.

Buxton:
Tawny L. Babbitt, an exercise physiology major, was awarded the Jesse Michael Gabacik Memorial Scholarship. Babbitt is a 1993 graduate of Portland High School and has attended Casco Bay College and Southern Maine Community College.

Cape Elizabeth:
Scott Petrlik of Cape Elizabeth, a computer science major, was awarded the Governor’s Computer Science Scholarship. Scott is a non-traditional student, who has returned to school after many years as a professional programmer.

Damariscotta:
Patricia S. T. Sims, a graduate student in literacy education with a concentration in English as a second language, was awarded the Lawrence H. and Pearl W. Fickett Educational Leadership Scholarship. Sims earned a Bachelor of Arts from Monmouth University.

Dixfield:
Debra Bea Shurtleff, a Lewiston-Auburn College natural and applied sciences major, was awarded the Androscoggin Bank Scholarship.  Shurtleff graduated from Dirigo High School in 1992 and is the daughter of Arthur and Darlene Porter of Peru, Maine.  Shurtleff and her spouse Wil reside in  Dixfield.

Dover-Foxcroft:
Lanna Lee Maheux-Quinn, a sociology major, was awarded the Portland Junior College Scholarship. She graduated from Foxcroft Academy in 1986. Maheux-Quinn is the daughter of Walter and Dottie Maheux of Westbrook. She is the spouse of Edmund Davis-Quinn, also of Westbrook.

Embden:
Ashley Michelle Carey, an accounting major, was awarded the Burchard A. Dunn Memorial Scholarship, the George D. Woodward Accounting Scholarship, the Anson Academy Scholarship, the TD BankNorth Scholarship, and a Merit Scholarship. Carey is a 2006 graduate of Carrabec High School and the daughter of David and Sharon Carey.

Farmington:
Amy Belanger, an athletic training major, was awarded the Department of Exercise, Health, and Sport Sciences Scholarship. Belanger is a 2005 graduate of Mount Blue High School and attended Merrimack College. She is the daughter of Andre Belanger of Farmington and Dorie Belanger of Westbrook.

Freeport:
Eric Meyer, a master’s in business administration student, was awarded the Portland Pipeline Corporation Scholarship. He graduated from Herndon High School, Herndon, Va., in 1977.  Meyer received a bachelor of arts in history from the College of William and Mary, Williamsburg, Va., in 1981 and a master of social work from the University of Maine in 1997. He is the spouse of Pat McKenzie of Freeport and the son of Charles and Kay Meyer of Bristol.

Hartford:
Patricia Malone, a Lewiston-Auburn College humanities and social behavorial sciences major, was awarded the Literary Achievement Award.  She resides in Hartford with her husband Peter Morse.

Kittery:
John L. Olsen III, an accounting and finance major, was awarded the Robert W. Berry Memorial Scholarship. Olsen graduated from R. W. Traip Academy in 2001 and is the son of John and Patty Olsen of Kittery.

Lewiston:
Katherine A. LaMore, a graduate student in social work, was awarded the Lunder Scholarship and a USM General Achievement Scholarship. LaMore earned an associate’s in social services from the University of Maine in Augusta in 2003 and a bachelor’s in social work from the University of Southern Maine in 2006. She resides in Lewiston with her husband, Stephen LaMore.

Limerick:
Frank Kehoe, Jr. of Limerick, an applied technical education major, was awarded the William G. Hooper & Laura S. Hooper Scholarship. Kehoe is a 1980 graduate of Northeast Metropolitan Regional Vocational High School, Wakefield, Mass. Kehoe is the son of Frank and Mary Helen Kehoe of Revere, Massachusetts.

Mapleton:
Kimberly M. Lopez, a social work and education major, received the Alice E. Toothaker Scholarship. Lopez is a 2002 graduate of Presque Isle High School and the daughter of Richard and Debbie Lopez of Mapleton.

Mattawamkeag:
Deziree Dawn Markie, a nursing major, was awarded the Mildred A. Roche/Alice G. Green Memorial Nursing Scholarship. Markie is the daughter of Scott Markie of Mattawamkeag and Terri Libby of Millinocket.

Mechanic Falls:
Bonnie M. Robbins, a graduate student in school counseling, was awarded a USM College of Education and Human Development Clinical Fellows Scholarship. Robbins is a 1989 graduate of Hingham High School, Hingham, Mass. Robbins is the daughter of Marc and Elaine Lasky of Poland and Joan Reynolds of Newton, Mass.

Minot:
Mike Nelson, a double major in mechanical engineering and computer science, was awarded the Masi Magnetic Research Scholarship. Nelson is a 2005 graduate of Calvary Christian Academy. He is the son of Chris and Alison Nelson, also of Minot.

Naples:
Vijayarani Suresh, a graduate student in the nurse practitioner program, was awarded the Anthem Scholarship. Suresh resides with her husband, Abraham Suresh, in Naples.

North Berwick:
Bonnie Best, an environmental science major, was named the Outstanding Student in Environmental Science. Best is a 1983 graduate of Noble High School. She is the daughter of Frank and Dorothy Austin of North Berwick. Best and her spouse Lynn reside in North Berwick with their two children.

Old Orchard Beach:
Katarina Kuzmova, an master’s in business administration student, was awarded the Dean John W. Bay Scholarship. Kuzmova previously attended Husson College in Bangor. She is the daughter of Milan Kuzma and Jana Kuzmova of Bratislava, Slovakia.

Larry White Jr., a computer science major, was awarded the Governor’s Scholarship. A 1992 graduate of Livermore Falls High School, he is son of Larry White Sr., and Janice White of Jay.

Phippsburg:
Gail Percy Fitch, a clinical counseling student, was awarded a USM College of Education and Human Development Clinical Fellows Scholarship.

Poland:
Jenna D. Nelson, a music education major, was awarded a Joan Martin Beaudry Scholarship. Nelson is a 2006 graduate of Edward Little High School.

Portland:
Justin Levesque, a master’s in applied science and master’s in business administration student, was awarded the Outstanding Graduate Student Award for the Masters in Manufacturing Systems Program. Levesque is a 2004 graduate of Bates College, Lewiston. He is the son of Lionel and Geri Levesque of Portland.

Nicole M. Jensen, a nursing major, was awarded the Women’s Board of MMC Nursing Scholarship. Jensen is a 1992 graduate of Portland High School and attended Southern Maine Community College before transferring to USM. She is the daughter of George and Marie Hubner. She and her husband, Bryce R. Jensen, reside in Westbrook.

Germaine Ntumba Kapena, a business administration major, was awarded the Wayne H. Bonoff ’95 Scholarship. Kapena previously attended the University of Kinshasa in Zaire.

Lauren Rose-Cohen, a nursing major, was awarded the National Counsel of Jewish Women Scholarship and the USM College of Nursing and Health Professions Dean Patricia Geary Memorial Scholarship. Rose-Cohen is a 1996 graduate of Mount Holyoke College and attended Southern Maine Community College before transferring to USM. She is the daughter of Don Peterson of Portland.  She and her partner, Liz Rose-Cohen, reside in Portland.

Presque Isle:
Brianna J. Blanchard, a psychosocial rehabilitation counseling student, was awarded a USM College of Education and Human Development Clinical Fellows Scholarship. Blanchard is a graduate of Presque Isle High School. She is the daughter of Anne and Brian Blanchard of Fort Fairfield.

Rockland:
Gretchen M. Schmitt, a Lewiston-Auburn College leadership and organizational studies major, was awarded the Society for Human Resources Management Scholarship. A 2002 graduate of Rockland District High School, she is the daughter of John and Cherly Schmitt, also of Rockland.

Saco:
Jared Boudreau of Portland Maine, a computer technology major, was awarded the Outstanding Graduating Senior of 2007. Boudreau is a 1999 graduate of Mount Desert Island High School. He is the son of William and Carol Boudreau of Saco.

Danielle Lynn Dadiego, a geography-anthropology major, was awarded the Bertha F. Loomis ’37 and Charles H. Loomis ’39 Scholarship. Dadiego is a 2003 graduate of Bonny Eagle High School. She is the daughter of Mike and Lisa Dadiego of Saco and Lori Matthews of Limington.

Sanford:
Lauren Amber Demers, a College of Education and Human Development graduate student in the Teachers in Elementary and Middle Schools program, was awarded the Laura B. Hansen Scholarship. Demers is a 2002 Sanford High School graduate and the daughter of Robert and Lucille Demers of Sanford.

Shapleigh:
Amy S. Brown, a graduate student in adult education, received the Ruth V. Conley Scholarship. Brown graduated from Massabesic High School in 1989. She is the daughter of Wanda and Franklin Brown.

South Portland:
Farrah Taylor Giroux, a graduate student in the Extended Teacher Education Program, was awarded the College of Education and Human Development Scholarship and the Lunder Scholarship. Giroux earned a bachelor’s degree in English and French from Wellesley College and is the daughter of Donald and Candice Giroux of South Portland.

Allison Libby, an English major, was awarded the Portland Junior College Scholarship. Libby is a 2005 graduate of South Portland High School.

Topsham:
James R. Morris III of Topsham, a computer science major, was awarded the Governor's Computer Science Scholarship and the Presidential Dirigo Scholarship. Morris is a 2006 graduate of Mt. Ararat High School. He is the son of Jeffrey and Wanda Morris of Topsham.

Vassalboro:
Stephanie Jeanne Gilbert, a music performance major, received the USM General Achievement Scholarship. Gilbert is a 2005 graduate of Winslow High School. She is the daughter of Stephen and Susan Gilbert of Vassalboro.

Westbrook:
Christopher Robin Huntley, a school counseling student, was awarded the Dexter Huntoon Memorial Award. Huntley previously attended New Hampshire College. He is the son of Robert Huntley of Portland and Patricia Bojus of Freedom, NH.

Nicole M. Jensen, a nursing major, was awarded the Women’s Board of MMC Nursing Scholarship. Jensen is a 1992 graduate of Portland High School and attended Southern Maine Community College before transferring to USM. She is the daughter of George and Marie Hubner. Hera Anne Knight, a nursing student, was awarded the Mabel Skillin Nursing Scholarship. Knight is the spouse of David Knight of Westbrook.

Lanna Lee Maheux-Quinn, a sociology major, was awarded the Portland Junior College Scholarship. Maheux-Quinn is the daughter of Walter and Dottie Maheux of Westbrook. She is the spouse of Edmund Davis-Quinn, also of Westbrook.

Windham:
Jessica L. Madsen, a graduate student in the Extended Teacher Education Program, was awarded the Anna Keating Scholarship. Madsen is a 1996 graduate of Windham Christian Academy. She is the daughter of Lew and Mary-An McGouldrick of Gorham. She and her husband David reside in Windham.

Winterport:
Sam Gaudet, an industrial technology major, was awarded the Cilley Technology Scholarship. Gaudet is a 2004 graduate of Hampden Academy.  He is the son of Janet and Paul Gaudet of Winterport.

Woodland:
Matthew Blanchette, a computer science major, was awarded the Governor's Computer Science Scholarship. Blanchette is a 2001 graduate of Caribou High School.  He is the son of Don and Cindy Blanchette of Woodland.

Yarmouth:
Michael Corson, a business administration major, was awarded the William G. McGowen Scholarship and the Maine Higher Education Assistance Foundation Scholarship. Corson graduated from Yarmouth High School in 1987. He and his spouse Holly, resides in Yarmouth.
