Portland Press Herald Columnist Kicks off USM’s Evenings at Abromson Series

August 31, 2007

Portland Press Herald columnist Bill Nemitz and Press Herald photographer Shawn Ouellette traveled to Iraq during the spring of 2007 reporting on the War in Iraq to Mainers while imbedded with units of the Maine Army National Guard and the Army Reserve.  Nemitz will talk about his experiences, observations and insights about Iraq, Maine soldiers, and the war during an evening discussion featuring a backdrop of Shawn Ouellette’s photos.  The event will take place at 7 p.m., Wednesday, September 19, in USM’s Abromson Community Education Center on the Portland campus. Tickets are $15 public ($10 for USM students/employees and OLLI members), and can be purchased online, by phone, or at the door.  Visit http://www.usm.maine.edu/cce or call 207-780-5900.

For Nemitz, this spring’s trip was the third he’s made to Kuwait and Iraq since 2004, all of which he shared with readers of the Portland Press Herald and Maine Sunday Telegram. He reflected that, “…The friendly competence with which these Mainers do their jobs—whether working in an operating room or guarding a 45-truck supply convoy as it rolls north into Iraq—has not changed…(but) these days, as you go from one military installation to another, a palpable weariness hangs over Operation Iraqi Freedom.”

Evenings at Abromson will continue with the USM School of Music performance of “L’Orfeo” by Claudi Monteverdi on Sunday, October 14, followed by Portland Playback Theatre’s “Holidays from Heaven and Hell,” taking place on Wednesday, November 14. For information about these events and other continuing education opportunities available at USM, see http://www.usm.maine.edu/cce.
