USM Nursing Students Program on Elder Healthcare

April 19 , 2007

Contact: Lois Hamel, Assistant Professor, USM College of Nursing and Health Professions
780-4223.

Adult and family nurse practitioner students from the University of Southern Maine graduate program are presenting two educational sessions with the Area Agency on Aging. The first event will feature two student speakers presenting on common medical side effects and be held from 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m., Tuesday, April 24, at the Kittery Community Center meal site, Two Cole Road, Kittery, Maine. The second event will focus on restless legs syndrome and exercises that increase mobility as presented by four USM students from 11 a.m. - noon on Tuesday, May 1, at the Acton Congregational Church meal site location on the corner of Route 109 and H Road, Acton, Maine.

Nurse practitioners are recognized primary care providers by Medicare and most insurance companies. In Maine, new nurse practitioners work under supervision of a physician for two years and then are able to apply for independent practice status. The University of Southern Maine has consistently prepared master's-level students for the adult and family nurse practitioner roles. For more information about these and other graduate nursing program options, see USM College of Nursing and Health Professions Web site at http://www.usm.maine.edu/conhp/.
